🖥 PlayStation, PC, Multi-platformGOG Wants You To Make Your Own Physical Games
In the wake of the news that Sony will end PlayStation disc production by 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/), a lot of folks are expressing their disgust at the idea of a digital-only game library. But players aren't the only ones sharing their frustration--today, GOG.com(http://gog.com) joined the conversation with a short tutorial showing players how to physically preserve their digital games. https://twitter.com/GOGcom/status/2077037131751432515 "Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc, and it's yours forever," the digital gaming storefront shared in an X post. "You don't need a storefront's permission to play what you bought." Of course, this doesn't perfectly solve the problem. Not every game is available on PC, not every game is available for purchase on GOG (like Ubisoft's game catalogue, for example), and some games--though they may be technically preservable on a disc--won't necessarily be playable. "Unless it's an always-online game and they shut down the servers," one X user replied(https://x.com/TheGamerDadGG/status/2077059218805334076?s=20) to GOG's post. "You own it, you have it, but you can't play it." But that was already the case long before Sony began manifesting its vision of a discless future. Always-online games have always been beholden to the whims of whatever entity pays their server costs. The issue GOG is hoping to address here is the disappearance of online storefronts. When they go offline--as the PlayStation Store on PS3 and Vita will next summer(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-to-end-playstation-store-support-on-ps3-and-vita/)--any digital games that players have purchased but don't have installed on the console will become inaccessible for them to download. (Although Microsoft, at least, seems to be toying with a disc-to-digital plan(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sonys-no-more-discs-debacle-was-inevitable-but-the-worst-is-yet-to-come/) that would allow players to retain access to the games they've bought.) GOG's do-it-yourself solution is a Band-Aid for a much bigger problem--one that might require lawmakers to intervene(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sonys-no-more-discs-debacle-was-inevitable-but-the-worst-is-yet-to-come/) if players ever hope to truly own their digital games. But it's certainly better than nothing.

🖥 PlayStation, PC, Multi-platformFormer PlayStation Exec Is Less Than Impressed With Steam Machine
The Steam Machine is slowly making its way into the wild, with some folks getting their hands on Valve's not-a-console console(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/steam-machine-is-not-a-console-valve-says/). One of those people is former SIE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, who called the device "meh" in some recent social media comments. Yoshida took to X on July 2(https://x.com/yosp/status/2072582164898787363) to give his early impressions of the Steam Machine. In a long post, he not only called its performance "meh," but he also said that it's "hard to recommend" because of its high price tag. https://twitter.com/yosp/status/2072582164898787363 "The system recommends to default to 1080p--am I going back to PS4 days?" Yoshida pondered. "Some games take a looooooong time to boot. What is it doing?" He clarified that he'd only been playing it for "a few hours"--he posted his thoughts in the early morning on July 2--but ultimately concluded that the device just doesn't live up to its $1,000+ retail price(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-internet-has-some-thoughts-on-the-steam-machines-1000-price/). It's not all bad for Yoshida, though. He did say(https://x.com/yosp/status/2072582535847313898) that the Steam Machine's "small form factor and quietness" are good while commending the device's changeable faceplate, easy-to-use UI, and the ability to play Steam games on the living room TV. That last fact alone makes it "reason enough" to keep the Steam Machine, but these features appear to be where the positives end for now, as overall, Yoshida just isn't quite buying what Valve is selling. The Steam Machine has begun shipping out to folks following its June 29 launch. It's very possible, though, that you may have to wait a while for yours, especially considering how confusing the preorder emails Valve started sending out were(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/steam-machine-preorder-emails-are-super-confusing/). You could always check out eBay, but be warned: You'll likely pay double the price(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/steam-machine-preorders-are-about-to-begin-so-of-course-theyre-already-on-ebay/).
