Oh, how things have changed. Just over a decade ago, Sony performed a slam dunk straight on Microsoft's head for its video on how to share PS4 games, and now it seems like PS6 games will be digital only. Well, Microsoft-owned code repo site GitHub has taken that opportunity to take a swing back, and announced you can now put your public repo on a CD-ROM.
Yeah, it's a bit of a weird decision from GitHub, but a good way of getting in on the conversation. In its latest tweet, GitHub says, "We heard you. And we agree. In light of recent developments in physical media, GitHub is proud to announce that you can now obtain your public repo on CD-ROM."
It continues, "Keep it. Lend it to friends. Pass it on to your children. Your code is physically yours, forever. Until you lose it, let's be real."

The catch here is that it's a limited run. You can only get a CD-ROM of your public repository between July 2 and July 6, 2026, and supplies are limited. The first 1,000 eligible submissions will receive one copy, and you can only apply for one per person via GitHub's form. Notably, there's no talk of payment on the form, which could imply GitHub are sending these out for free. It seems like eligible users will have to sign up to find out for themselves.
It seems pretty obvious that it's a funny marketing bit from GitHub, and not exactly a good way to use your code repos. You can technically keep the disc for as long as you're able to, but your code stored on a thumb drive, HDD, or SSD could last just as long and doesn't require a physical accessory like a CD drive.
PC gaming has been mostly digital for a long time, so many rigs (mine included) don't even have a built-in disc drive to actually run it. But alas, that's not the point. If you are an active GitHub user and want something to display on a wall, then you may want to fill out the form and try your luck in the next few days.
Interestingly, despite Microsoft catching well-deserved flak for the DRM announcement back in 2014, it actually seems to be a little better than Sony on the digital preservation front right now. Just this week, it was reported by The Verge that Xbox is testing a disc-to-digital feature for digitising physical games. And as of right now, there are no reports of it putting a stop to physical game discs.
