Overview & Key Takeaways

Square Enix has announced a streaming event to mark the 40th anniversary of Dragon Quest on May 27

It's almost time for some cheerful slimes! Square Enix has announced a streaming event to mark the 40th anniversary of Dragon Quest. The first installment of the beloved role-playing series made its debut in Japan on May 27, 1986. While the series has long had a devoted following outside Japan, the release of 2017's Dragon Quest 11 saw its popularity explode internationally. In the years since, Square Enix has released multiple top-down remakes of early installments, including 2024's Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, 2025's Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD Remake, and 2026's Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.

Here's all the essential info you need to know to tune in, and what to expect from the event.

Dragon Quest 40th anniversary stream date, time, and how to watch

The Dragon Quest 40th anniversary event will take place at 6 a.m. PST / 9 a.m. EST / 2 p.m. BST and will be broadcast on the official Dragon Quest YouTube channel. According to the description on the video, "The program is scheduled to be about 10 minutes long. We hope you'll tune in."

Dragon Quest 40th anniversary stream: What to expect

What better way to mark a huge anniversary than by looking ahead to the future of the series? It's been five years since Square Enix first announced Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate back in 2021, during the series' 35th anniversary event. While 10 minutes is a pretty short runtime, if a good chunk of that is devoted to a fresh look at DQ12, fans will have plenty to chew on. What's more, it's not uncommon for major games to be featured in more than one summer showcase, so a fresh look at Dragon Quest 12 here could be followed by an additional trailer at PlayStation's State of Play on June 2, the main Summer Game Fest showcase on June 5, or the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.

Earlier this month, series creator Yuji Horii offered a preview for the audience of the KosoKoso livestream.

"We'll be doing a livestream on May 27. I think we'll be able to make an announcement about the next game," Horii stated. "We'll also have various other things besides the next game, so please look forward to it."

It seems like Horii wasn't supposed to share that info, because the video was taken down soon after.

A post on the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit claimed that Square Enix Japan posted eight unlisted videos to the Dragon Quest playlist on its YouTube channel ahead of the event. However, the post was later debunked by another user, who found the private video links were actually for older videos of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.

High On Life Is Coming To VR, And Yes, You Can Stroke Your Weird Guns

High on Life(https://www.gamespot.com/games/high-on-life/) is coming to a new platform, as the irreverent first-person shooter with talking alien guns is getting a VR port. Announced during the VR Games Showcase, this new version of High on Life will launch for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR headsets in 2027. Originally developed by Squanch Games, the VR port of High on Life is being handled by Flat2VR Studios. The developer says that it is essentially rebuilding the game so that it can take advantage of VR tech, allowing players to interact with their talking--and opinionated--guns. The trailer below shows off some of these new features, like being able to stroke your weapons and feed them, and we bet they'll have something to say about that. "As we're adding all of these fun, manual VR interactions, it's really important that they make sense in gameplay and that they're maintaining the fast, fluid, and powerful feeling of combat," High on Life VR game director Emily O'Neil said in the reveal trailer. https://youtu.be/EQziBgQgrJI First released in 2022, High on Life saw players take on an alien cartel that invaded Earth and turned the populace into recreational drugs. As an up-and-coming bounty hunter armed with Gatliens--sentient guns that could be used to solve all kinds of problems--the game was a hit thanks to its weird sense of humor, fun gameplay, and an extremely Australian knife(https://high-on-life.fandom.com/wiki/Knifey) hellbent on stabbing everything. A sequel was released earlier this year, but reviews were lukewarm(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/high-on-life-2-review-skate-n-gun/1900-6418463/), thanks in part to various technical issues that hampered its launch. VR fans can also look forward to a port of System Shock from Flat2VR Studios. Not much was revealed about this project, but the teaser trailer(https://youtu.be/w-baA9y0Ld0) suggested that the VR version will be based on the superb 2023 remake(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-best-pc-games-of-2023/2900-4984/) of the cult-classic 1994 game.

Resident Evil Movie Director Reveals The Scariest Scene In The Series That Made Him "Nope Out"

Zach Cregger, the director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie, has revealed which scene scared him the most in the game series, and it was a spooky scene from 2021's Resident Evil Village involving a baby that hunts you down. Prefacing his comments with the disclaimer that he was playing Village in virtual reality, Cregger told the PlayStation Blog(https://blog.playstation.com/2026/04/30/resident-evil-qa-director-zach-cregger-shares-inspirations-and-a-new-film-teaser/) he was disturbed at the scene where players enter the dollhouse, go down into the basement, and assemble the big doll on the table. As part of this scene, a giant baby emerges that comes after the player. "There was something about the sounds that baby made, and the lights cut out, and you're running through these halls, and you have to hide under a bed," he said.
