Overview & Key Takeaways

Zach Cregger, the director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie, has revealed which scene scared him the most in the game series, and it was a spooky scene from 2021's Resident Evil Village involving a baby that hunts you down.

Prefacing his comments with the disclaimer that he was playing Village in virtual reality, Cregger told the PlayStation Blog he was disturbed at the scene where players enter the dollhouse, go down into the basement, and assemble the big doll on the table. As part of this scene, a giant baby emerges that comes after the player.

"There was something about the sounds that baby made, and the lights cut out, and you're running through these halls, and you have to hide under a bed," he said.

"It was the only time playing a video game I've ever actually just noped out and taken a break. I was like, 'This is too intense. I took the headset off, had a cup of coffee, then went back in and finished it later. But I mean, that really got me. It's so scary. It's honestly f**king terrifying," Cregger added.

VR can be heighten the feelings of tension and dread, but that scene was also very scary in non-VR, as are numerous other sequences in the long-running series. Now we'll just have to wait for Cregger to tell us what he thinks is the scariest non-VR scene in the Resident Evil series.

Cregger's upcoming Resident Evil movie does not feature any Resident Evil characters or adapt any of the stories from past games. He said he feels "so sensitive" about talking about the movie on behalf of the game fans, because he believes fans of the games are "only going to be happy if I tell the story of the games." He didn't want to do that, however, because "I feel like I wouldn't do it justice."

The Resident Evil movie is inspired by the games, however, in that it will follow a character--a courier played by Weapons actor Austin Abrams--from point A to point B in a setup that may feel familiar to fans of the game series.

"You go on this crazy journey, and you go through all these different environments, and things just seem to be escalating and escalating. That feels so cinematic to me. So I wanted to tell a story that could take place in the Resident Evil world, but wasn't telling a story that the games had already told," he said.

The Resident Evil movie releases in theaters on September 18. For more, be sure to check out our thoughts on why it may not be such a big deal that the Resident Evil movie doesn't look like the games.

High On Life Is Coming To VR, And Yes, You Can Stroke Your Weird Guns

High on Life(https://www.gamespot.com/games/high-on-life/) is coming to a new platform, as the irreverent first-person shooter with talking alien guns is getting a VR port. Announced during the VR Games Showcase, this new version of High on Life will launch for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR headsets in 2027. Originally developed by Squanch Games, the VR port of High on Life is being handled by Flat2VR Studios. The developer says that it is essentially rebuilding the game so that it can take advantage of VR tech, allowing players to interact with their talking--and opinionated--guns. The trailer below shows off some of these new features, like being able to stroke your weapons and feed them, and we bet they'll have something to say about that. "As we're adding all of these fun, manual VR interactions, it's really important that they make sense in gameplay and that they're maintaining the fast, fluid, and powerful feeling of combat," High on Life VR game director Emily O'Neil said in the reveal trailer. https://youtu.be/EQziBgQgrJI First released in 2022, High on Life saw players take on an alien cartel that invaded Earth and turned the populace into recreational drugs. As an up-and-coming bounty hunter armed with Gatliens--sentient guns that could be used to solve all kinds of problems--the game was a hit thanks to its weird sense of humor, fun gameplay, and an extremely Australian knife(https://high-on-life.fandom.com/wiki/Knifey) hellbent on stabbing everything. A sequel was released earlier this year, but reviews were lukewarm(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/high-on-life-2-review-skate-n-gun/1900-6418463/), thanks in part to various technical issues that hampered its launch. VR fans can also look forward to a port of System Shock from Flat2VR Studios. Not much was revealed about this project, but the teaser trailer(https://youtu.be/w-baA9y0Ld0) suggested that the VR version will be based on the superb 2023 remake(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-best-pc-games-of-2023/2900-4984/) of the cult-classic 1994 game.
