10 New Movies to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max (September 25-27)

Happy weekend! As we near the end of September, some of the year’s biggest movies are now available on streaming and VOD. So before you fill up your watchlist with classic horror to get into the Halloween spirit, why not catch up on some of the latest films to hit your favorite streamers?

Two big and exciting movies are available on some of the most popular apps this week. Toy Story 5 is on Disney+, following Jessie, the adorable toy cowgirl who's been around since the franchise’s second film back in 1999. Backrooms, one of the year's biggest horror hits, is now available on HBO Max.

1 Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 might be the best entry in the Pixar franchise in over a decade. While the story features protagonists Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen), it smartly relegates them to the background, narrowing its focus on Jessie (Joan Cusack) and her bond with Bonnie as the little girl faces the perils of technology.

From our Polygon review:

While the movie doesn’t quite reach the heights of the first three films, it is a thoughtful, funny, emotional entry into the franchise that improves upon Toy Story 4 in every way. And while I still kinda think the franchise should have concluded with Toy Story 3, I no longer fear and resent future Toy Story movies. Toy Story 5 is so good, and puts the characters in such a good place, that it changed my whole mentality on the matter.

2 Backrooms

After dominating much of the conversation on horror this year, Backrooms is finally streaming. Based on his viral series of YouTube videos, Kane Parsons directs his first feature exploring the liminal space in the basement of a furniture store and the obsession its existence triggers in its unfulfilled manager (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

Per our Polygon review:

The expansion of Parsons’ series of YouTube shorts (the most popular of which has been viewed more than 78 million times) is deeply unnerving. Better yet, it’s haunting. In a spectacle-based film environment where it’s easy to forget most of the movies we watch before we’ve even left the theater, Backrooms leaves lingering shivers and ongoing anxieties. It’s smart, “elevated” horror for the tired-of-slashers crowd, but it has plenty of slasher shocks as well. The best recent comparison is Zach Cregger’s Weapons, another deeply frightening movie also built around excavating the uncanny, without unpacking all its mysteries.

3 Tuner

4 Spa Weekend

Three childhood best friends, played by hilarious comedic actresses, haven't seen each other in years. Coco (Michelle Buteau) orchestrates their reunion at a luxury spa for a weekend getaway in Palm Springs that quickly turns chaotic when their wild-card friend (Isla Fisher) unexpectedly shows up.

5 The Love Hypotheses

Based on the beloved romance novel of the same name, The Love Hypotheses follows a PhD student (Lili Reinhart) who impulsively kisses her upright professor (Tom Bateman) to prove a point to her friend. The two then agree to a fake dating agreement that benefits them both. They, of course, fall in love.

6 The Deputy

7 Unabomber

Unabomber is based on Ted Kaczynski’s (Jacob Tremblay) life, following him at different points in his life, from a 16-year-old Harvard prodigy involved in psychological experiments to the man responsible for mail-bombings that injured dozens and killed three people.

8 The Furious

The Furious has been labeled as one of the best martial arts films in years, following a mute handyman who takes justice into his own hands after a child trafficking syndicate abducts his daughter.

Per our Polygon recommendation:

Put simply, The Furious scores five out of five OMFGs. It is, dare I say, the best action movie of 2026 and maybe the past 50 years. (I weigh pre-’70s action movies on a different scale.) It’s a nonstop, ceaseless barrage of the most inventive, visceral, mind-bending action sequences that have ever been put to screen. Every punch feels like it’s going to shatter the space-time continuum.

9 The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner has a plot that feels straight out of the ‘50s. Can men raise… their own children?! It follows a car salesman (Nate Bargatze) who becomes a stay-at-home dad when his wife (Mandy Moore) goes away on a business trip. He finds the job harder than he thought.

10 Jackass: Best and Last
