Minecraft: Where to find Abandoned Camps

Minecraft's Abandoned Camps are a new location type you might stumble across in your travels after the Wilderness Bound update. These little spots are practically treasure troves, and within them you'll find new crafting materials and decorative items, along with at least one treasure chest, useful materials for Survival Mode, and a chance of stumbling upon a Copper Chest with even rarer loot.

Finding your first Abandoned Camp in a new world might take some time, but once you do, you'll always have a trail to follow to the next camp. And if you're very lucky, it might even take you to a Dappled Forest biome.

How to find Abandoned Camps in Minecraft

From what we've seen across several new worlds since Wilderness Bound released, Abandoned Camps are almost always in forest biomes. We've seen them in Birch Forests, Windswept Forests, Bamboo Forests, and one in a Dappled Forest, to name a few. It's possible they show up in other biomes as well, but if you're struggling to find one, head to the woods.

Abandoned Camps are impossible to miss in most woodlands, except the densely covered Dark Forest biome, as the tents are huge and bright white. They're made of Wool Stairs, another new addition to the Wilderness Bound update, and a block type that's so distinct you can't accidentally mistake it for something else. Plus, those tents are big.

Anyhow, once you find a camp, you'll end up with several combinations of loot. These include (though not always in the same camp):

• Berries
• Straw Beds (always at least one)
• Chests (sometimes these are barrels, but they still contain loot)
• Cobwebs
• Cushions
• Campfires
• Wool Stairs (the tent blocks)

Your first time in a camp, bust up Straw Beds, Wool Stairs, and Cushions to get their respective crafting recipes. Cushions are fabulous decorative items, and Straw Beds let you pass a night without having to make a new spawn point. They break after one use, so make sure you've got enough materials on hand to craft one when you're out exploring.

There's a small chance you'll find a Copper Chest, with even better loot than the main ones. These are buried one block underground, usually under a distinctive feature, such as a block that's a different colour from the surrounding blocks. These are rare, but it's worth digging around to find them, as they likely contain armour, maps leading to ruins, or both.

Whatever you find in your Abandoned Camp, the chest (or barrel) will nearly always have a map that leads you to another camp. This discovery keeps repeating in a chain, with another map at the next camp and so on, so you won't have wander around looking for the next one if you don't want to. We had this happen six times consecutively before arriving at a camp with three barrels and no map in sight. If you're very lucky, though, you might even get a map pointing you toward a camp in the tough-to-find Dappled Forest biome.
