Minecraft: Where to find the Dappled Forest biome

Minecraft's Dappled Forest biome, added in the Wilderness Bound update, is ideal for all your autumnal decorating needs. Or it would be, if you could find one. Minecraft's newest biome is rather reclusive, and depending on the world and where you spawn in it, you might have to do quite a bit of traveling before you run across the warm tones of the poplar tree groves.

There are a few rules that govern where Dappled Forest biomes spawn and, more importantly, where they don't. Finding one is worth the trouble, since the blocks and flora that turn up in Dappled Forests are unique and retain their visual identity even when you take them elsewhere in the world. In other words, you can make your own slice of autumn paradise even in the middle of a desert.

Where to find the Dappled Forest biome in Minecraft

There's no hard and fast rule for where you'll find a Dappled Forest biome. There are, however, a few general guidelines to keep in mind. Dappled Forests never spawn next to other woodland biomes, and are much more likely to spawn in colder climates and highland biomes.

You'll know when you're getting closer to a Dappled Forest. Every Dappled Forest biome has at least one Poplar Tree, and their red and orange foliage stand out starkly against the surrounding areas, even if the biome only contains a few trees.

The Dappled Forest biome is easy to miss, unfortunately. Across two different worlds, it took us several hours of bouncing from one metaphorical pole to another before we finally found one, and even then, it was tiny. Despite being a biome, Dappled Forests aren't quite like other biomes you might run across. Some of them are big, as you'd expect. Others are miniscule - literally just a stretch of brown grass and a few trees hugging a riverbank.

If you're very lucky, you might get a map from an Abandoned Camp pointing you directly toward a Dappled Forest biome, though this is something that only happened to us once.

What can you find in the Dappled Forest biome?

Within a Dappled Forest biome, you'll find Poplar Trees. Busting their trunks gets you the new Poplar Wood block, which sports a cosy-looking earthy grey tone. If you strike their leaves, you'll end up with a few Poplar Saplings.

Planting Poplar Saplings is useful for ensuring you have a supply of Poplar Wood, of course, though it also adds a splash of Dappled Forest colour anywhere in the world. Poplar Trees and the red shrubs that grow in Dappled Forest biomes retain their colour wherever you plant them.

You'll also find Shelf Mushrooms growing on upright and fallen Poplar Trees, which, aside from their aesthetic value, also function as bouncy platforms.

Dappled Forests are mainly for vibes. If you aren't that keen on fall looks and are struggling to track the biome down, you're not missing out on much if you leave the finding of one for another day.
