Xbox Is Apparently Still Open to Physical Discs for Project Helix

Overview & Key Takeaways

Xbox has reportedly been asking some players whether physical disc support would be a feature they'd want to see in its next console.

The end of physical media has been a popular topic of discussion for the gaming community in the past few months. While Sony has confirmed that it will be moving on from physical games and going all-in on digital media, Xbox has not made it clear where it stands. Reports indicate that a recent Xbox Insider survey is asking how important it would be for fans to have physical media support in Xbox's next-gen console, revealing that there is still hope of Xbox will produce a console with a disc drive.

Sony has been getting a lot of heat for its stance against physical media. But the truth is, besides damaging the relationship it has with fans, ceasing disc production won't hurt the company much. At the end of the day, physical game sales only account for a small portion of Sony's sales. Despite many gamers still collecting physical games, the practicality of digital media is undeniable — for both customers and publishers. So much so that it's become increasingly common for game publishers to skip physical disc releases and either provide a code in a box or take the digital-only route.

Xbox has not confirmed whether it will go all-digital or help keep physical media alive with its next-gen console, Project Helix. It seems that the company might be undecided and is currently probing fans to know what features they value. According to Power Up Gaming, some gamers in the Xbox Insider program took a survey about the next console's possible features, including physical disc support.

Xbox is reportedly asking Insiders if they want Project Helix to have physical game support

This report comes from a now-deleted post from X user XboxTimDog. The screenshots show that the survey asked the user how important it would be for the next-gen console to let them "install games from a physical disc." It is unknown if other insiders have received this survey, as each person is given their own set of questions to answer. If you're an Insider, be sure to take any surveys available on the Xbox Insider Hub app to see if you get any similar questions.

As Sony walks away from physical media, Xbox is in a good position to win over gamers' hearts, after already earning some brownie points for its disc-to-digital program. Supporting physical media on its next console could give it a big advantage over the PlayStation 6.

Xbox’s New Mythic Achievements Take 15 Seconds To Tell You “Good Job”

Xbox Achievements have remained mostly the same since they were first introduced decades ago, but it looks like they're set to evolve slightly with the introduction of "Mythic" Achievements. Similar to PlayStation's platinum trophies, it looks like players will have to earn every Achievement in a game before they're awarded one of these. How do you know if you've earned this rare level of kudos on your PC or Xbox? Don't worry, unlocking a Mythic Achievement will result in your system rewarding you with a lot of digital fanfare. As spotted by Klobrille, unlocking a Mythic Achievement will trigger a lengthy animation and sound effect, running almost 15 seconds in total: https://twitter.com/klobrille/status/2102548362914365594 On the surface, it looks like adding a Mythic Achievement to your shelf is a sign that you've truly done everything there is to do in a game, so sitting back and enjoying the lengthy applause from your Xbox after you've poured hours into it makes sense. According to TrueAchievements(https://www.trueachievements.com/news/xbox-mythic-achievement), Mythic Achievements are worth zero Gamerscore and are tracked separately from your usual Achievements. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma had teased(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-version-of-playstation-platinum-trophy-teased-for-later-this-year/) the rollout of these new awards back in August, but it looks like they're rolling out during another bleak week at Xbox(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/all-the-major-xbox-changes-microsoft-announced-today-layoffs-halo-changing-hands-and-more/). As part of ongoing cuts, hundreds of people have been laid off across Xbox Game Studios, studio consolidation has resulted in various developers being grouped under new arms of Xbox, and things are not looking good for Ninja Theory(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ninja-theory-now-expected-to-close-as-deal-falls-apart/). Undead Labs has also found a new owner(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/state-of-decay-3-lives-on-and-is-still-coming-to-game-pass/)--that has not been officially revealed yet--but the move away from Xbox has resulted in downsizing at the State of Decay 3 developer.
