Return to Ravenloft with a new comic series
Published in 2021, Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft is one of the best Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition books. Written from the perspective of vampire hunter Rudolph van Richten, the sourcebook incorporates a series of letters written from him to other heroes, including his protégé Ezmerelda d'Avenir. These letters provide meaningful context about the Domains of Dread that form the tabletop role-playing game's signature horror setting. The book was so popular that Wizards of the Coast reworked it for the 5.5e ruleset with Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which was released in June. Another follow-up will arrive next month in a totally different format.
Dark Horse Comics’ four-issue series Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft follows Ez and van Richten’s other monster-hunting proteges as they try to save the world. Guided by the ghost of Rudolph’s son Erasmus van Richten, Ez finds herself in the frozen realm of Lamordia. Captured by the Darklord Viktra Mordenheim, who wants to use Ez in her twisted experiments, Ez has to escape to continue her quest with the help of a mysterious new arrival. Polygon can exclusively reveal the first five pages of Issue #1 ahead of its Sept. 16 release.

Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft is written by Amy Chu (Carmilla: The First Vampire, Red Sonja), with line art by Ariela Kristantina (The Girl Who Draws on Whales, Adora and the Distance), colors by Arif Prianto (Poison Ivy, Green Lantern Corps), and letters by Haley Rose-Lyon (BUMP: A Horror Anthology, Jill and the Killers). The series adds to Dark Horse’s other D&D titles, including The Fallbacks and Dungeons & Dragons, a new series following the adventures of Mordenkainen, Tasha, and other icons of the Forgotten Realms. The first issue will also have a series of alternate covers by Guillem March, Riley Rossmo, Francesco Francavilla, Todor Hristov, and Angela Wu.
