A dev tried to warn WB Games not to launch Lord of the Rings: War in the North 10 days before Skyrim, but was 'overruled'

Overview & Key Takeaways

As a wise tree guy once said, "We must not be hasty."

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, a WB Games-published 2011 action RPG about a different fellowship that went the other way, recently reappeared on Steam in a polished-up Legacy Edition package. While the modernizations are getting a favorable reception—it's currently enjoying a Very Positive rating on Steam—its original launch 15 didn't earn much attention for something with "The Lord of the Rings" in the title.

War in the North didn't review well, but looking back, there's a certain Bethesda-sized factor that might have stolen some of its thunder: Its original release date was November 1, 2011—just 10 days before The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim came out. On X this week (via IGN), a former Warner Bros. dev said that unfavorable matchup might have been avoided if the publisher had taken his advice back in 2011.

Christian Allen—current design director on Project Zomboid and former design director at WB Games Seattle, which coordinates Warner Bros. development and publishing efforts—responded to the Legacy Edition's reveal to share how he'd tried without success to get the publisher to revise its launch plans.

"Wow this is cool. 15 years ago I argued vociferously not to release this up against Skyrim, as it wouldn't get a fair shake. I got overruled," Allen said. "Nice to see it get a proper release."

In follow-up replies, Allen noted that, in addition to the oppressive cultural gravity of Todd Howard, War in the North also suffered from a strangely thin marketing campaign. Either WB Games "wrote it off," or it "thought hardcore LOTR fans would just know about it, somehow," he said. Unfortunately, even the Lord of the Rings doesn't sell itself.

Not long after War in the North's disappointing launch, its original developer—Snowblind Studios—was merged with Monolith Productions in 2012. There, many former Snowblind studio staff would contribute to Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, a production that Allen had initially overseen as WB Games design director. After releasing the sequel, Shadow of War, in 2017 and working for years on a Wonder Woman game, the studio was eventually shuttered by Warner Bros. in 2025 as part of "a strategic change.

As for War in the North, Allen's overall assessment is that it was ultimately a casualty of corporate shortsightedness.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

"Quarterly revenue motivations drive more decisions than people realize. It's a big challenge with stock-price driven organizations," he said. "Must be hard to be an exec and go, 'Well, this game will do better if we hold it until March, but my bonus will take a 50% hit.' 🤷"

Maybe the games industry of today isn't all that different from those of previous decades, despite how often it feels otherwise.

Major Steam Leak Reveals Achievements For Persona 6, Kingdom Hearts 4, And Unannounced Games

A massive Steam leak has revealed hundreds of achievements for upcoming games, including highly anticipated titles like Kingdom Hearts 4, Persona 6, and Fable. On the website Exophase--which tracks achievements for games on Steam, Epic Games Store, and more--the achievement lists for numerous in-development games were uploaded to it and made public. It looks like the site trackers scraped up all the achievements uploaded to Steam recently, resulting in potential story spoilers and the reveal of several unannounced--or canceled--titles. "Seems like a possible screw-up on Valve's end, a bunch of games with achievements that should be private are accessible through the API right now, and that's why they got scanned into the site," Exosphere owner Mike Bendel AKA x3sphere wrote in a ResetEra post(https://www.resetera.com/threads/persona-6-and-other-unrevealed-achievement-lists-are-leaking-via-steam-walking-dead-tomb-raider-shrek-kh4-more.1627462/page-4post-160223521). "I usually never see games without an actual name pop up with achievements, yet over the past hour or so, a bunch have (when there's an unknown name, we just set it to the AppID)." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3NrZKxdh6Q It's worth noting that many of these achievement lists appear to be incomplete due to the use of placeholder text, but many of them are rife with spoilers. While we won't mention them here, the leak has revealed more of the Disney-themed worlds(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-weirdest-worlds-that-could-technically-be-in-kingdom-hearts-4/) that players can travel to in Kingdom Hearts 4(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kingdom-hearts-4-delay-you-say-no-way-series-co-creator-states/), and story details for Persona 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/persona-6-is-finally-official-after-years-of-waiting/) have surfaced. People are, of course, digging deep into the list, so if you're looking to go into any particular game without fear of spoilers, it might be time to start muting certain keywords before it's released. This isn't the first time Steam has been responsible for leaking data. Last month, a security breach saw 13TB of information on unreleased games and prototypes uploaded to online spaces and made available for download. This leak covered games uploaded to Steam between 2003 and 2013, including pre-release builds of major games from the era, such as Spore, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and an early Portal 2 prototype.
