No more USB installation: Windows 11 Insiders now able to fully reset their system via cloud download even when the OS won't boot

I imagine a lot of people never really bother with Windows Recovery options. But for people like me who test different systems and mess around with different software pretty often, a quick and easy reset can be incredibly useful. That is, assuming it is actually quick and easy, which in my experience hasn't always been the case with Windows. A new Windows Recovery option, however, looks incredibly promising.

The latest Windows 11 Beta Preview Build—version 26220.9343, for Insiders—has added the option to "cloud rebuild" your Windows 11 operating system.

"We're introducing Cloud rebuild, a new recovery option that restores a Windows 11 PC to a clean, known-good state by performing a full OS reinstall, even when Windows won't boot. Unlike Reset this PC, Cloud rebuild downloads both the target Windows image and the device's drivers from Windows Update, so the device comes back fully functional without USB media, without a custom image, and without depending on the health of the currently installed OS."

Now, of course, for many Windows Reset use cases this won't be necessary, because if you can boot into Windows and don't need a completely fresh install then you can just use the standard reset method. But if you've run into boot issues, or if you want to ensure everything in the underlying OS is squeaky clean, you might currently be out of luck unless you have some Windows installation media on a USB drive.

This can be especially important to do if, for instance, you're worried your Windows partition might be corrupted, or if you're concerned that malware might have embedded itself into the operating system files.

Now, Insiders—and presumably, down the line when the feature launches in the main branch, everyone—will be able to reset Windows with a completely fresh install via the recovery environment, no USB needed. That is, assuming you have a working internet connection to download Windows through. In the Recovery Environment, 'cloud rebuild' can be selected via Troubleshoot > Recovery and uninstall.

This is yet another change to Windows 11 that gives me (tentative) confidence that Microsoft is putting the OS on the right track. Microsoft's newfound commitment to genuinely improve the operating system in ways that most people actually want does, for now, seem to be bearing fruit.
