🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformWolverine-Themed PlayStation 5 Consoles And Controllers Drop In September
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/11/d8df172a/marvelswolverine-limitededitionmarvelswolverinebundleandaccessoriesps50-10screenshot.jpg.webp) Marvel's Wolverine, one of the biggest games of the year, comes out it a little over a month. Today we learned it'll get the same treatment as PlayStation's other beloved first-party IP and launch alongside a limited edition PS5 console and controller. A bundle with a PS5 digital edition (there's no disc drive – more on that later), controller, and a game code for Marvel's Wolverine will be available starting September 15, the same day the game comes out. Check it out for yourself below. The console and controller feature a slashing design caused by Wolverine's iconic claws, and the console itself includes art of Wolverine's face. For those who already have a PS5, PlayStation is also selling console covers, which you can swap out for the system's base white plates (or whatever color you might have on there now). The covers will get an added color, Adamantium, which swaps out the yellow for silver, but while there are yellow covers for both the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro, you can only get Adamantium for a PS5 pro. Controllers will come in both colors, however. The bundle and yellow controller will be available at "select retailers," but the console covers and silver controller are exclusive to PlayStation's online storefront(https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/). All of these products have, unsurprisingly, been affected by Sony's recent string of price increases for its physical hardware and accessories. Here's how much each item is going to cost: - PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – Marvel’s Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition Bundle: - $649.99 US / £569.99 GBP/ €649.99 EUR / ¥96,980 JPY - DualSense Wireless Controller – Marvel’s Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition: - $84.99 US / £74.99 GBP/ €84.99 EUR / ¥12,480 JPY - PlayStation 5 Console Covers – Battle Yellow Limited Edition: - $74.99 US / £64.99 GBP / €74.99 EUR / ¥9,980 JPY - PlayStation 5 Pro Console Covers – Marvel’s Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition: - $74.99 US / £64.99 GBP/ €74.99 EUR / ¥9,980 JPY - PlayStation 5 Pro Console Covers –Marvel’s Wolverine Adamantium Limited Edition: - $74.99 US / £64.99 GBP / €74.99 EUR - DualSense Wireless Controller – Marvel’s Wolverine Adamantium Limited Edition: - $84.99 US / £74.99 GBP/ €84.99 EUR Of course, this all comes during a controversial time for PlayStation. Its decision to phase out physical disc releases(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/01/playstation-will-cease-production-of-physical-discs-for-new-games-in-january-2028) starting in 2028 has frustrated fans around the world, and the comments of the video linked above are flooded with people complaining about the company's decision and the bundled console's lack of a disc drive. Even unrelated videos on the channel, like trailers for third-party games coming to PS5 have their comments full of people standing up for physical discs. At the same time, physical media is undeniably becoming more expensive to produce, and PlayStation has raised the price of its consoles and accessories twice in the last year – first last August(https://gameinformer.com/2026/03/27/sony-announces-playstation-5-and-portal-price-increases-coming-next-week), then this March(https://gameinformer.com/2025/08/20/sony-is-raising-the-price-of-every-playstation-5-model-tomorrow-august-21). 🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformMarvel’s Wolverine Has Given Us Sony’s Best-Looking PS5 Ever
Marvel's Wolverine(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marvels-wolverine-gameplay-platforms-and-everything-we-know/1100-6516081/) launches next month, and to celebrate, Sony has revealed a new limited-edition PS5 console and controller design inspired by the game. Dubbed the Marvel’s Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition Bundle and priced at $650, fans of the Marvel mutant can choose between a PS5 Digital Edition that comes with both a matching DualSense wireless controller and a download code for the game, or they can pick up the $75 console covers for their base model PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Sony says that these will be available through the PlayStation Direct store, as well as through select retailers starting September 15, the same day that Marvel's Wolverine launches. https://youtu.be/9KDStKJtMZY The design includes a striking yellow finish, as well as an illustration of Wolverine by Jock, the graphic artist who has worked on numerous comic books over the years and film projects like 2012's Dredd. His design includes exposed claw marks that reveal the PS5 console chassis, and the overall look is inspired by the "Battle Reborn" costume that Wolverine wears in the field. The $85 DualSense controller also ties into that aesthetic, and it will be available as a standalone purchase. "I wanted to show Wolverine at his fiercest for Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition PS5 Console bundle and accessories. I still draw all my artwork traditionally, so the opportunity to marry cutting-edge hardware with the energy and looseness of hand-drawn ink is incredibly exciting. I’m stunned by how well the console and accessories captured the raw energy of the drawing, bringing Wolverine to life in a completely unique way." !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-10.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-1.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-9.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-7.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-8.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-2.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-3.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-4.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Marvel-Wolverine-5.jpg?w=636) If that design is a little too yellow for you, there's an alternate PS5 Pro console cover and DualSense controller that features the same illustration on a silver background, emulating the unbreakable adamantium that coats Wolverine's bones. It won't make your PS5 unbreakable since it's made out of plastic, so try to avoid stress-testing the cover. Compared to the PS4 generation, Sony has released far fewer limited-edition PS5 consoles. Most of these designs have also been very underwhelming, with the Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Ghost of Yotei editions being either very subtle with their designs or too flashy--with the sole exception being the classy PlayStation 30th anniversary PS5 consoles(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-30th-anniversary-kicks-off-with-nostalgic-ps5-themes-and-the-cranberries/1100-6528157/). In contrast, some of the limited-edition DualSense controllers featured incredible designs that perfectly balanced the unique identity of their video games with distinct designs. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/death-stranding-2-on-the-beach-ps5-limited-edition-dualsense-controller-restock/1100-6531400/), Marathon(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marathon-dualsense-controller-preorder-guide/1100-6537489/), and Concord's DualSense controllers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sonys-new-limited-edition-ps5-controller-is-its-best-looking-one-so-far/1100-6525289/) stood out from the pack, and it's a shame that those designs never made it to PS5 consoles.

🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformThe Latest PS5 Boxes Come With A Pretty Bleak Warning
The writing is on the wall for PlayStation and its plans for an all-digital gaming future--or on the PlayStation 5 packaging, to be exact. With Sony ending the production of game discs(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/) in January 2028, the PS5 manufacturer has reportedly begun to slap warning stickers on restocks of its console, informing consumers that games will only be available in a digital format 17 months from now. Spotted by YouTuber Behind the Games--who says the console was purchased by a "trusted source" they know--the sticker includes the following disclaimer: "From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console." The sticker looks legitimate--and Behind the Games has uploaded a video of it(https://x.com/BehindTGames/status/2085343574548189195) since then--as the same text can be found on the listings for PS5 consoles through European Amazon storefronts(https://www.amazon.de/PlayStation-PS5-SLIM-V2-Playstation%C2%AE5/dp/B0FP2S1MNB?th=1), likely so that Sony can comply with consumer laws in that region. https://twitter.com/BehindTGames/status/2085059320694100095 The company's decision to no longer offer a physical version of PlayStation games has been met with significant backlash(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-disc-death-sends-the-internet-into-its-physical-media-defense-arc/) so far, with many users calling for a boycott of the company and constantly replying to social media posts with calls for Sony to reverse its decision. Despite the ongoing campaign, Sony is still moving ahead with its plans, with Sony CFO Lin Tao commenting on the backlash(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-defends-going-digital-but-says-it-understands-players-love-of-physical-ps5-games/) during a Q&A session for investors this week. Tao acknowledged that the announcement had been met with "strong views," but she said that Sony would continue to "cautiously" proceed. The company has in recent months noted how the ratio between physical and digital game sales has only widened in recent years, and in the last quarter (covering April to June), 82% of its game sales(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-latest-ps5-sales-data-shows-digital-pulling-even-further-ahead/) were digital.
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformCapcom Unfazed By Physical Games Dying Off
One of the biggest talking points in gaming lately has been around Sony's decision to end support for physical game discs in 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/). It's prompted concerns about game preservation, along with people generally being upset about owning physical media. Now, publisher Capcom has shared its thoughts, with management saying the shrinking physical game market is not expected to have much of an impact because the company sells mostly digital games. "Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital. We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time," the company said(https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/explanation/2026/1st/explanation20261st02.pdf). Capcom is not alone in having a growing share of its game sales come from digital--a shift to digital has been a growing trend in recent years across the board. Nintendo, for its part, just released its latest earnings briefing today, August 6, confirming digital game sales made up 61.5% of total sales(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/2608062e.pdf) during the latest quarter, up from 59.3% during the same period last year. Electronic Arts recently released its latest report as well, showing 81% of game sales were digital(https://www.tradingview.com/news/tradingview:f534cc4e79e85:0-electronic-arts-inc-fy-2026-revenue-7-53b-eps-3-51-10-k-summary/). For its part, Sony said it's ending support for physical game discs on PlayStation in response to "consumer trends." The data clearly shows a growing trend toward digital games, but experts also believe the shift to all-digital is about power, control, and making more money(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is-sony-killing-discs-its-all-about-profitability-and-control-expert-says/). The biggest game of 2026, GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/), is also releasing as a digital exclusive. The game will be sold at retailers in a box, but players only get a code to download the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-is-not-releasing-with-a-disc-and-that-just-makes-sense-in-2026/).

🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformBig Walk Just Hit A Major Milestone On PS Plus
It's been nearly seven years since developer House House released its breakthrough title, Untitled Goose Game(https://www.gamespot.com/games/untitled-goose-game/). The company's follow-up, a co-op puzzle-solving game called Big Walk(https://www.gamespot.com/games/big-walk/), is out now, and it's already achieved an unexpected critical milestone on PlayStation Plus Essential. As reported by GameSpot's sister site Metacritic, Big Walk has landed with a 94(https://www.metacritic.com/game/big-walk/) score among reviewers. That makes it the most critically acclaimed game to ever be released on PS Plus Essential on day one. Last year's indie adventure-puzzle hit Blue Prince(https://www.gamespot.com/games/blue-prince/) achieved nearly the same score, with a 92 on Metacritc, but it was released on PS Extra, not Essential.. GameSpot's Big Walk review(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/big-walk-is-one-of-the-best-co-op-games-ever/) calls it a game of the year contender and hails it as one of the best co-op games ever created. "Big Walk takes fundamental and timeless video game concepts–obstacles and incentives for clearing them–and, through an intensely focused co-op experience, shapes them into something singularly rewarding, supremely mysterious, and totally unforgettable," notes the review. For anyone who is just getting started with the game, GameSpot has put together eight tips you need to know ahead of playing Big Walk(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/8-big-walk-tips-you-should-know-before-you-play/). 🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformOnimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Director Motohide Eshiro On Onimusha: Way Of The Sword’s Resurrection Of The Series
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/28d3ca2e/380onimusha10.jpg.webp) Onimusha: Way of the Sword(https://gameinformer.com/Onimusha) is the latest game to grace the cover of Game Informer(https://gameinformer.com/cover-reveal/2026/07/16/cover-reveal-onimusha-way-of-the-sword). As part of my cover story trip to Capcom’s Osaka HQ, where I played the game and interviewed the team making it, I also got to speak to Motohide Eshiro, the planner of Onimusha: Warlords and director of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny(https://gameinformer.com/product/onimusha-2-samurais-destiny) (and its recent remaster(https://gameinformer.com/interview/2025/04/22/onimusha-2s-director-on-remastering-the-playstation-2-game-and-the-state-of)). I published an in-depth retrospective about Onimusha’s success, its “Sengoku Biohazard” origins, and more based on my interview with Eshiro, and you can read that right here(https://gameinformer.com/exclusive-interview/2026/07/23/a-look-back-on-the-first-two-onimusha-games-with-planner-and), but I also spoke to him about watching this series return after a 20-year hiatus(https://gameinformer.com/exclusive-interview/2026/07/20/why-2026-was-the-year-to-bring-onimusha-back-after-a-20-year-gap). Though he’s not officially working on Way of the Sword, he works at Capcom in a producer role, supporting up-and-coming producers working on various projects at the publisher-developer. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/23/db966a7e/Eshiro%20Header.jpg.webp) Game Informer Motohide Eshiro Sitting beside Way of the Sword director Satoru Nihei, Eshiro tells me he’s been “very surprised and impressed” with the way video game graphics, particularly across the Onimusha series, have evolved alongside the action genre over the past two decades since Onimusha’s start. He also believes Nihei and the rest of the Way of the Sword team have nailed the swordplay action. “I feel that one of the strengths of it is the swordplay,” Eshiro says. “In particular, I found it was quite an interesting evolution from the base game, but also, maintaining elements like the Issen, that satisfying feel of pulling it off, and the back and forth of Japanese swordplay – I feel they’ve done a really good job of capturing that feeling and creating a bit more of a realistic start of the swordplay action.” There is a clear but polite embarrassment in the room from Nihei, as he listens to Eshiro discuss Way of the Sword’s strengths, and it’s endearing to see. Nihei refers to Eshiro as a legend and is happy to hear he thinks Way of the Sword is satisfying in its action. “When we have legends like Eshiro check out the game, I definitely feel nervous,” he says. “Are they going to be like, ‘What are you doing here?’ There’s definitely a bit of pressure, but obviously I look forward to hearing what they have to say about the game.” !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/8a80e229/380onimusha20.jpg.webp) Delving further into his impressions, Eshiro says he is very impressed by what the Way of the Sword team has accomplished with today's technology. “Coming from someone involved with the past titles, I am very impressed with that and am really happy to see the project in good hands,” he adds. “I’m very excited for people to get their hands on the game.” Ever the studio man, Eshiro closes out his thoughts by saying if someone is excited about Way of the Sword and wants to learn more about the series, “I would love for people to check out the Onimusha 1 and 2 remasters to see how the series has changed over these 20 years.” I actually played through both remasters in the lead-up to this cover story trip for Way of the Sword, and though I loved the games as a child, I was surprised to see how well they hold up. Onimusha: Warlords, in particular, remains a fascinating game; it really is “Sengoku Biohazard,” the first game’s codename, à la a Resident Evil game (even set in a singular location like Spencer Mansion) but with samurai instead of agents and swords instead of guns. Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny ups the ante, expanding the game’s scale, complete with a wide-spanning friendship system and multiple branching paths that are still intriguing pieces of game design history today. All of this is to say, I echo Eshiro’s thoughts: Give Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny a go if you’re waiting for Way of the Sword and in need of more swordplay action. I’ll be diving deeper into Capcom’s return to Onimusha as part of Game Informer’s month of Way of the Sword coverage. We’ll be publishing exclusive gameplay and behind-the-scenes videos (including a Rapid-Fire Interview) on the Game Informer YouTube channel(https://www.youtube.com/@gameinformer) as well.
