🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformReleasing Cyberpunk 2077 In Its Poor State “Was For Sure Wrong,” CD Projekt Admits
CD Projekt Red's RPG Cyberpunk 2077 infamously launched in December 2020 in such a poor technical state that Sony took the rare move to remove it from the PlayStation Store. Thousands of people refunded the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2077-sold-13-7-million-copies-in-21-days-30000-people-got-refunds/1100-6490486/). CD Projekt joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski has now reflected on this, saying it "was for sure wrong" to launch the game in that state, but he pushed back against the theory that the studio did so to appease investors who wanted to see financial returns. Speaking to The Game Business(https://www.thegamebusiness.com/p/cd-projekt-red-if-you-want-a-cost), Nowakowski said COVID "was a factor" in the game's rough state at launch, because "the team was getting exhausted in a different way." He admitted there were "people outside telling us we should launch," and fans lobbied for this as well. The developers themselves also "wanted to push it out the door" because the ongoing development was "really tiring." Looking back on it, now with the benefit of hindsight, Nowakowski said, "The decision to launch was for sure wrong, period. There is no denying it." That being said, Nowakowski said, "There were no magical investors telling us, 'You have to get this out.'" Instead, he said, "It was much more complicated and psychological." !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/cyberpunk20bf82.jpg?w=636) A scene from Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt's fiscal years follow the calendar and end on December 31. Cyberpunk 2077 was released on December 10 in 2020, and this timing led people to wonder if the developer put the game out then instead of delaying to 2021 to meet the fiscal deadline. There is, after all, precedent for game developers pushing games out the door in a rough state to hit certain fiscal deadlines. Cyberpunk 2077 might have released in a rough technical state, but it was a smashing success at launch commercially. The game sold nearly 14 million copies right out of the gate, which made it one of the most successful RPG releases in the history of video games(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2077-sold-13-7-million-copies-in-21-days-30000-people-got-refunds/1100-6490486/). Given that success, CD Projekt Red executives got multimillion-dollar bonus payouts(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2077-dev-execs-got-huge-bonuses-despite-games-troubled-launch/1100-6490859/), while developers also took home big bonus payouts related to the game's huge success in sales. Following Cyberpunk 2077's rough launch, CD Projekt Red steadily supported the game with numerous updates and improvements over the years, culminating with a massive, game-changing 2.0 update in 2023(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2077-2-0-update-rebuilds-its-gameplay-to-make-a-fantastic-rpg/1100-6517704/) alongside the Phantom Liberty expansion. Today, the game has sold more than 40 million copies(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2077-just-hit-another-massive-sales-milestone/). In other news about Cyberpunk 2077, Microsoft just announced that the game is leaving Xbox Game Pass soon(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-removes-cyberpunk-2077-and-9-other-games-very-soon/). Given the huge commercial success of Cyberpunk 2077, it only makes sense that CD Projekt is now making Cyberpunk 2, but it is likely still years away from release(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2-is-probably-further-away-than-you-hope/1100-6531896/). On the more immediate horizon is The Witcher 3: Remastered this year(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-witcher-3-remastered-is-adding-dozens-of-upgrades-and-it-might-be-free-for-you/), The Witcher 3's new Songs of the Past expansion in 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-witcher-3-songs-of-the-past-is-a-mystery-centered-on-dandelion/), and then The Witcher 4 in 2028.(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-4-release-window-narrowed-down-to-2028/) Fans hoping to play The Witcher 1's remake might want to get comfortable(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-witcher-remake-is-waiting-on-the-witcher-4-to-continue-development).
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformKonami Digital Showcase Will Feature Updates On Three Games Including Silent Hill: Townfall And Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/25/5d601af1/silenthill03.jpg.webp) Konami has announced a new Press Start digital showcase that will air Thursday morning, September 3, shortly after PlayStation’s scheduled State of Play(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/31/playstation-schedules-back-to-back-state-of-plays-for-thursday). The presentation will provide new updates on Silent Hill: Townfall(https://gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/02/12/silent-hill-townfall-is-coming-this-year-from-konami-and-annapurna), Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse(https://gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/02/12/castlevania-belmonts-curse-made-by-konami-and-the-dead-cells-devs-launches), and Rev. Noir(https://youtu.be/SGRT0YrOZs?si=x-2iT1XwhQa4iAS). The showcase begins at 8 a.m. PT/11 a.m. ET and will air on Konami’s YouTube(https://youtu.be/us-U1NKynio?si=nUYUfTGj4b3HZ8i6) and Twitch(https://www.twitch.tv/konami) channels. A press release states, “In this broadcast, Konami will present information on its latest lineup—including Silent Hill: Townfall (releasing Sept. 24), Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse (releasing October 15), and the recently announced RPG Rev. Noir—interspersed with new gameplay footage and video messages from the developers.” It appears Konami Press Start will only feature the three advertised titles based on the verbiage. The press release specifically clarifies that there will be no announcements regarding the remake of the original Silent Hill(https://gameinformer.com/2025/06/12/konami-teases-a-remake-of-the-original-silent-hill), which is currently in production by Bloober Team. Silent Hill: Townfall releases later this month and is a first-person adventure by Screenburn, the developer of Observation. You can learn more about the game in our extended preview from Summer Game Fest(https://gameinformer.com/preview/2026/06/08/radio-drama). Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a new side-scrolling entry by Dead Cells developer Evil Empire, and it launches next month. We played it at a recent hands-on event, and you can read our impressions here(https://gameinformer.com/preview/2026/03/03/back-from-the-dead). Rev. Noir is an action RPG that was revealed during a PlayStation State of Play in February(https://gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/02/12/everything-announced-at-the-february-playstation-state-of-play), and it's the title we know the least about. It's currently slated as a PlayStation 5 exclusive and has no release window, so perhaps Konami will narrow that launch timing on Thursday.
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformThe Witcher 4 Probably Won’t Be On A Disc, But Dev Teases Physical “Feelies” Of Some Type
CD Projekt Red recently confirmed that the long-awaited RPG The Witcher 4 is targeting a release in 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-4-release-window-narrowed-down-to-2028/), and that timing has led many to wonder if the Polish developer will offer the game on a disc. After all, Sony is ending support for physical PlayStation discs in 2028 and Microsoft is expected to ditch discs, too. CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski told The Game Business(https://www.thegamebusiness.com/p/assassins-creed-creator-patrice-desilets) that the studio has "no influence" on what companies like Sony and Microsoft choose to do with regards to supporting discs. "The discs for the first parties, including PlayStation, have to be manufactured in their own factories. So, if they stop manufacturing indeed by 2028, then yes we won’t have a disc," he said. At the same time, Nowakowski stressed that CD Projekt Red is a company that is highly fond of giving people "access to tangible collectible things." Given that, the executive teased that The Witcher 4 will, "for sure," have some kind of "box." "We’re nerds ourselves, and we like that. We always supported that. So, whatever is the case, we’re going to be for sure having a box. We’re going to have a box that’s going to have some feelies in it," he said. "Something you’re going to be wanting to open up and enjoy. But we have no influence actually on what’s the case here." The Witcher 4 kicks off a new trilogy of The Witcher games, spanning The Witcher 4, 5, and 6. These games are planned to all be released within a six-year window, so the entire trilogy could be here by the end of 2034. In addition to these three new The Witcher games, CD Projekt is working on The Witcher 3 Remastered(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-witcher-3-remastered-is-adding-dozens-of-upgrades-and-it-might-be-free-for-you/) and a new expansion for the game called Songs of the Past(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-witcher-3-songs-of-the-past-is-a-mystery-centered-on-dandelion/). Additionally, the team is developing Cyberpunk 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2-is-probably-further-away-than-you-hope/1100-6531896/), a The Witcher multiplayer game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mysterious-witcher-game-project-sirius-undergoes-more-changes-report/), and a game made in partnership with Scopely(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-devs-new-game-with-saudi-arabias-scopely/).

🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platform“Aggressively” Selling PS5s Isn’t Needed, As Sony Focuses On Making More From Existing Owners
This November will mark the sixth anniversary of the PlayStation 5 console's launch, but in the years since its arrival, the gaming market has changed dramatically. The trend of consoles becoming cheaper over time has vanished this generation, as the PS5 now costs more today than it did in 2020, and the expectation is that Sony's hardware sales could slow down over time. Sony doesn't seem too worried about that, as company president and CEO Hiroki Totoki explained that there's no need to "aggressively" sell the console. "We are in the latter half of the lifetime cycle of a PS console," Totoki said to the Wall Street Journal. "That means that we do not need to aggressively sell the console today. And rather than that, we're focusing on recurring revenue from the current user base. And already, PS Plus has more than 125 million MAU (monthly active users) today. And how to monetize from the users is quite important for us." https://youtu.be/obR5p5AzRs Totoki wasn't clear by what he meant exactly in terms of aggressive PS5 sales, although it likely comes down to Sony not needing to discount the console or even sell it at a loss to draw in new users. Sony has been pretty open about its plans(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-could-offset-rising-ram-costs-by-monetizing-the-ps5-install-base/1100-6538266/) to increase revenue from the players it does have, and these numbers have been growing steadily over the last couple of years. PlayStation Plus is required to access online services for the vast majority of games available on the console, while higher tiers tempt potential subscribers with access to an expanded library of games via the PS Plus Game Catalog. At the same time, Sony is preparing to move toward an all-digital future(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/), as over 80% of games purchased for the console are done so through its digital storefront. Once Sony begins to phase out game discs starting January 2028, plugging that gap should result in a sizable jump in its profits(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is-sony-killing-discs-its-all-about-profitability-and-control-expert-says/). PS5 lifetime sales have reached 95.3 million units sold(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-is-closing-in-on-100-million-sales-but-its-losing-ground-to-the-ps4/) as of July 31, 2026. At the same time, the company is starting to feel the pressure from rising prices. Compared with the same period in 2025, console sales declined by 36% in the last quarter. The company still has an active PS4 userbase to monetize as well, and despite its decision to end PS5 disc production being met with a lot of criticism(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/over-220000-people-petition-sony-not-to-kill-physical-playstation-game-discs/), digital game sales increased(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-latest-ps5-sales-data-shows-digital-pulling-even-further-ahead/) from 78% to 82% during the recent financial quarter. It's worth noting that profits during this period did increase by 37% thanks mostly to US tariff refunds and favorable exchange rates, but none of these refunds will be passed back to consumers.
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformPlayStation Schedules Back-To-Back State of Plays For Thursday
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/31/8c847a6e/god-of-war-laufey-wm-screenshot-battle-en-30may26.jpg.webp) Following a wild week of announcements from Gamescom, PlayStation is turning the spotlight back on itself with not one, but two State of Play presentations. The first showcase will be a standard State of Play, while the latter is the return of State of Play Japan, and will be hosted by Yuji Kaji. Both will air this Thursday, September 3 at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. CEST / 10:00 p.m. JST. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/08/31/49b1ab69/stateofplay9-3-26.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/08/31/49b1ab69/stateofplay9-3-26.jpg.webp) "First, tune in for a new State of Play featuring updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, concluding with an extended look at the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Revelation from our friends at Square Enix," an announcement post on the PlayStation blog reads(https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/31/state-of-play-state-of-play-japan-return-on-september-3/). In addition to seeing more of Final Fantasy VII Revelation (which just got a new trailer during Gamescom), we can probably expect to see some of the other big PlayStation games on the horizon. It's pure speculation, but it's not out of the realm of possibility to see Marvel's Wolverine(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/22/insomniac-interview-reveals-marvels-wolverine-takes-place-when-the-x-men-dont-yet-exist), God of War Laufey(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/27/god-of-war-laufey-releases-in-february), or maybe even Kena: Scars of Kosmora(https://gameinformer.com/2026/02/12/kena-scars-of-kosmora-guides-players-to-a-new-adventure-this-year). And after last week's impressive extended look, our fingers are crossed to see more GTA VI(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/27/grand-theft-auto-vi-trailer-provides-lengthy-first-look-at-gameplay-including-story), even if it's unlikely. The second showcase, which will immediately follow the first, is specifically focused on "upcoming games from game studios in Japan and Asia, including new gameplay, announcements, and more," according to the blog announcement. On that front, we might hear about new projects from Atlus(https://gameinformer.com/gamescom-2026/2026/08/30/heres-every-game-we-played-at-gamescom-2026:~:text=launches%20next%20year.-,Persona%204%20Revival,-By%20Wesley%20LeBlanc), Sega, RGG(https://gameinformer.com/gamescom-2026/2026/08/30/heres-every-game-we-played-at-gamescom-2026:~:text=preview%20here.-,Stranger%20Than%20Heaven,-By%20Wesley%20LeBlanc), or Phantom Blade Zero, which is due out this October(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/12/new-phantom-blade-zero-trailer-reveals-donnie-yen-and-an-upcoming-state-of-play). The State of Play Japan will air in Japanese, but with English subtitles. The announcement doesn't hint at how long the presentation will be, unfortunately. You'll be able to watch it live on September 3 on PlayStation's YouTube(https://www.youtube.com/user/PlayStation) or Twitch(https://www.twitch.tv/playstation) channels.
