🎮 PlayStation, Xbox, Multi-platformSony And Microsoft: We’re Keeping Tariff Refunds For Ourselves And You’ll Get Nothing
Following Nintendo(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-will-not-refund-tariff-fees-it-passed-onto-customers-saying-they-received-exactly-what-they-bargained-and-paid-for/), both Sony and Microsoft have now argued in court that they are not obligated to provide refunds to consumers who paid more for a price-hiked PlayStation or Xbox console(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-are-video-game-consoles-so-expensive-these-days-and-games-historically-cheap/) related to US President Donald Trump's controversial tariff plan. The tariffs were deemed illegal, prompting companies to seek refunds. The companies getting those refunds are largely keeping them, though there have been some exceptions and outliers. In July, Sony said it was projecting to get $508 million back in refunds(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-parent-company-made-more-money-thanks-to-tariffs-it-shouldnt-have-paid/) from the US government over the tariffs, and "most" of that money was owed to Sony's gaming division. Sony is facing a lawsuit that claims Sony should disperse refunds, at least in part, to consumers who paid more for a PS5. Sony's legal team, however, says Sony will keep all the money and you'll get nothing back. "Paying fair market price for voluntarily purchased consumer goods is not a legally cognizable injury in fact," the lawyers said in a memo seeking to dismiss the class-action suit, as reported by Game File(https://www.gamefile.news/p/sony-and-microsoft-say-theyre-not). Microsoft's own legal team took a similar approach, saying in court, "There is nothing unjust about plaintiff purchasing an Xbox at an advertised price and getting exactly what they paid for..." Sony's argument in court added that the class-action lawsuit brought by gamers does not provide evidence that tariffs were to blame for the PS5 price hike implemented in August 2025, calling the claim "speculative and illogical." In announcing the price hike, Sony said it was raising PS5 prices in response to a "challenging economic environment,"(https://blog.playstation.com/2025/08/20/playstation-5-price-changes-in-the-u-s/) but not mentioning tariffs specifically. Sony's legal team said things like "inflation, currency fluctuations, component costs, logistics, competitive dynamics, or demand" could have also contributed to the PS5 price hike. Indeed, beyond tariffs alone, the AI-fueled demand for components and memory--the same equipment needed to make PS5 consoles--has led to shortages and increased costs for Sony and others in the market. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Screenshot-2026-09-03-at-10.31.50-AM.png) No refunds. Sony went on to cite its own additional PS5 price hike in March 2026--following the Supreme Court deeming the tariffs illegal--as proof that the hikes are not attributable to tariffs. "If tariffs were the cause of the price increases, one would expect SIE to lower prices once the tariffs were eliminated--not raise them again. Instead, the timeline confirms that the pricing of PlayStation consoles includes a diverse and dynamic set of input costs," Sony's lawyers said. Microsoft took a similar stance, saying the class-action suit fails to provide "pricing differential attributable to tariffs..." For Sony, its refusal to provide tariff refunds to players is just the latest public relations issue the company is facing. The company also announced plans to end support for physical PlayStation game discs in 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstations-disc-based-game-sales-have-dropped-dramatically-in-recent-years/), and a lot of people dislike that decision. Not every gaming company is taking such a hard line on this topic. Panic, the company behind the Playdate gaming handheld, said it will pass its own refunds on to customers who paid more(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/unlike-the-big-console-makers-playdate-is-refunding-you-those-tariff-fees/). People should get about $12 back. “It’s just not our money to keep, and it felt really good to give it back,” Panic’s Cabel Sasser told Game Developer(https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/playdate-maker-is-refunding-tariff-fees-to-customers). “That’s an easy way to know you made the right decision.” Many companies received major tariff refunds, and they are handling refunds differently. For example, Wamart and Home Depot have said they will use the cash infusion to lower prices on a variety of products(https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/30/trump-tariff-refunds-walmart-home-depot-target.html), but not directly refund anyone.. “At the end of the day, a product is worth what somebody’s willing to pay for it, and there is a lot of choice in this marketplace,” Bryan Eshelman, a managing director at consulting firm AlixPartners, told CNBC(https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/30/trump-tariff-refunds-walmart-home-depot-target.html). This may be true, and Sony may have no legal obligation to pass along refunds to consumers, but that doesn't mean it's sitting well with everyone. People are loudly voicing their opinions on social media, with many posting the Jeremy Irons quote from the movie Margin Call where his character says, "We are selling to willing buyers at the current fair market price." The latest gaming-related price hike came from Nintendo, which increased the price of the Switch 2 from $450 to $500 on September 1. Historically, console prices came down over time, but the world is different today(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-are-video-game-consoles-so-expensive-these-days-and-games-historically-cheap/).

🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformFinal Fantasy VII Revelation Drops April 8, 2027
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/83d8e6d9/Final%20Fantasy%20VII%20Revelation%20-%20Release%20Date%20Reveal%20Trailer%20%20PS5%20Games%200-12%20screenshot%20%281%29.jpg.webp) Final Fantasy VII Revelation finally drops on April 8, 2027, according to a new trailer dropped during today's PlayStation State of Play. It marks the conclusion of the most ambitious remake project of all time, coming out just over seven years after the initial remake. Check out the release date trailer below. The finale to this conclusion will see Cloud and co in their final face-off against Sephiroth and the mighty Weapons, who we saw more of in a recent trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live(https://gameinformer.com/gamescom-2026/2026/08/25/final-fantasy-vii-revelation-spotlights-its-weapon-battles-in-new-trailer). The release date trailer gives a brief rundown of each of the main cast members – Cid, Yuffie, Red XIII, Vincent, Barret, Tifa, Cait Sith, and Cloud – before closing with a line from Cloud. "Nobody knows what's waiting for us down there. But honestly? It's nothing the eight of us can't handle." The release date trailer was followed by a deeper dive into Revelation's new city and systems, including cat photography, which you can read about right here(https://gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/09/03/final-fantasy-vii-revelation-extended-gameplay-look-highlights-wutai). Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.
🎮 PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Multi-platformFinal Fantasy VII Revelation Extended Gameplay Look Highlights Wutai, Highwind Exploration, Queen's Blood, Side Quests, And More
!Final Fantasy VII Revelation April 8 2027 Release Date PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X/S Nintendo Switch 2 PC(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/d8c25029/ff701.jpg.webp) Square Enix has released another trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation(https://gameinformer.com/product/final-fantasy-vii-revelation), this time a whopping 10-minute look at the game's characters, story, setting, and so much more. Plus, the trailer also revealed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. The trailer begins by highlighting each playable party member alongside new looks at the game's expanded combat, then breaks to reveal the April 8 release date. After that, director Naoki Hamaguchi(https://gameinformer.com/sgf-2026/2026/06/12/we-asked-final-fantasy-vii-revelation-director-naoki-hamaguchi-whats-next-for) appeared on camera to introduce the rest of the trailer, and we learn more about how Cloud and Co. will jump from the Highwind airship and parachute down to the planet below, Fortnite-style. Once on the ground, you can hop onto your trusty chocobo and sprint/glide/fly around as far as the eye can see. Plus, this chocobo can be an active participant in combat now, and of course, you can also just hop off and fight with your character's weapons, too. Check out the release date trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation below: For the uninitiated, the FITS (Function-Integrated Tactical Suitware) system is the new addition to Revelation's combat, and it's basically this game's Job system, allowing different party members to slot into various classes like warrior, black mage, and more. You can access your party's FITS on the Highwind, which is your base of operations in Revelation. To head to a new location, pilot the Highwind there in real time, and when you're ready to jump, hop on out and parachute down to the ground below. You'll be bringing the Highwind to returning locations like Junon and new ones, too, like Wutai, Yuffie's ninja-centric homeland. This trailer offered a great look at Wutai, which looks like a fantastical take on feudal Japan, and Yuffie's grapple gun makes traversing its towering buildings a breeze. In addition to Wutai, Revelation features several new areas, such as Rocket Town, though the trailer stops short of showing it. However, the trailer does bring us back to Gongaga, which first appeared in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Here, Square Enix explains that side quests in locations like Gongaga will reveal more about what's happening in the world, including the whereabouts of other characters from the wider Final Fantasy VII universe of games and media. Strangely, Revelation lets you to speed up cutscenes by 2x, allowing you to blitz through narrative moments (though I'm not sure why you would do that outside of, potentially, repeated playthroughs). It turns out, side quests and the unfolding narratives associated with them will change based on who you are controlling in the party. Cissnei reacts differently when working with Vincent, for example, versus Yuffie, but Square Enix says players can discover that in April. One of the best parts of Rebirth, the optional but incredible Queen's Blood card game, returns in Revelation. This time, Red XIII is the protagonist of this Queen's Blood saga, and during his adventure, he'll encounter powerful opponents that turn standard bouts on their heads. To close out the trailer, Hamaguchi asks that players get through Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth ahead of Revelation's launch in April. Final Fantasy VII Revelation hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. 🖥 PlayStation, PC, Mobile, Multi-platformEpic Games’ New Voice Chat Lets You Keep Talking To Friends While Playing Different Games
Epic Games has announced that it's going to make it easier than ever to hang out and talk with friends across different platforms by launching Epic Parties. This voice chat service will work across Fortnite (on all supported platforms), the Epic Games Store launcher (PC, iOS, and Android), and the Epic Games app (iOS and Android). For example, you can start a voice party from your phone or PC launcher, ring up a friend who is busy playing Fortnite on their PlayStation, and even transfer that call from your phone to your PC when you get back to your desk. This means that you can sit in on a voice call through the Epic PC Launcher while playing completely different games from your Epic library. Other benefits include a seamless approach to grouping friends together, as Epic says that if you're in a voice party with friends and everyone decides to open Fortnite, then the game will automatically drop you all into the same lobby together. This new feature is competing directly with Discord, which has been the go-to third-party app for users for several years. Epic's built-in alternative aims to let users bring their social list, voice channels, and digital avatar with them across multiple platforms and from game to game, whether you are on iOS, Android, PC, or console. Epic has also hinted that these voice and avatar systems will be integrated directly into Unreal Engine 6, and the tools will be offered to other developers in time. For now, it's currently rolling out to Fortnite, and Epic Parties will be available in Rocket League next year. According to Epic's year-in-review stats(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/people-spent-more-but-played-less-on-the-epic-games-store-in-2025/2900-7449/), over $1 billion was spent in the store in 2025, and it reached an all-time record of 78 million monthly active users on PC. Earlier this year, Epic spoke more about its plans to further improve its digital storefront(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/epic-explains-its-blend-of-blockbusters-and-smaller-games-for-weekly-freebies/1100-6538882/). "Our goal is to keep building a storefront and launcher that players want to engage with and use to grow their game library, but we need to be able to connect players with the game they want to play at the time they want to play it," Kyle Billings, director of strategy and business operations at the Epic Games Store, said to GameSpot.
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformGrand Theft Auto VI Limited Edition DualSense Wireless Controllers Revealed
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/22c31de4/gta02.jpg.webp) Alongside a bevy of video game reveals from PlayStation today, the State of Play also gave us a brief look at two new DualSense controller designs themed around the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. With the big game set to release on November 19(https://gameinformer.com/2026/06/18/grand-theft-auto-vi-pre-order-date-and-cover-art-revealed), the new PlayStation designs should offer players a way to further celebrate their enthusiasm for Grand Theft Auto VI. The new controllers are understated but attractive – one in black and the other in white – each with an iridescent purple/blue backing in the middle that recalls the Grand Theft Auto VI logo. There’s also a prominent “VI” logo across the touchpad. No word yet on specific release date, but Sony usually aims to have these limited edition releases available by the time a game launches – if you can manage to snag one before they sell out.
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformGTA 6 Limited-Edition DualSense Controllers Are On The Way, And They Look Fantastic
During today's State of Play broadcast, Sony announced that two limited-edition Grand Theft Auto 6(https://www.gamespot.com/games/grand-theft-auto-vi/)-themed DualSense controllers will be released. They'll come in black or white and feature distinctive Leonida-themed graphics and coloring. Both have pastel pink icons on the buttons, with a blue-purple shift that sparkles along the bottom of the controller. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PlayStation-State-of-Play-Livestream-September-3-2026-1-36-49-screenshot.jpg?w=636) You can get the controller in black or white. On the rear of the controllers, the Grand Theft Auto logo is embossed, while the grips maintain the standard PlayStation icon texture. Elsewhere, the GTA 6 logo is etched on to the touchpad, and palm-tree-like shapes are embossed on the controller grips. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PlayStation-State-of-Play-Livestream-September-3-2026-1-36-47-screenshot.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PlayStation-State-of-Play-Livestream-September-3-2026-1-36-46-screenshot-1.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PlayStation-State-of-Play-Livestream-September-3-2026-1-36-43-screenshot.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PlayStation-State-of-Play-Livestream-September-3-2026-1-36-42-screenshot.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PlayStation-State-of-Play-Livestream-September-3-2026-1-36-39-screenshot-1.jpg?w=636) !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PlayStation-State-of-Play-Livestream-September-3-2026-1-36-38-screenshot.jpg?w=636) Both controls launch alongside GTA 6 on its release date, November 19. Surely there's no better way to experience the biggest gaming release of the decade so far? They'll set you back $85 each. At least you'll no longer have to mash the X button on your new controller, as it's been confirmed that there's a new mechanic for sprinting(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-removes-the-series-worst-feature/) in GTA 6. In other GTA 6 news, you won't have to tend to Jason and Lucia's romantic relationship(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/dont-care-about-gta-6s-romance-system-dont-use-it-dev-says/) if you don't want to.
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformFinal Fantasy VII Revelation And Its PS1-Style World Map Arrive In April
Final Fantasy VII Revelation finally has a release date: April 8, 2027. Square Enix confirmed the news today during the PlayStation State of Play livestream(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-state-of-play-september-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-games-and-trailers/), along with nearly 10 minutes of new footage. The release date was confirmed via a trailer highlights all eight playable characters in the main party: Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, Vincent, and Cid. We also see gameplay of the team in action, including team-up abilities like Vincent's Galian Beast form rushing a group of enemies with Red XIII, and Tifa and Yuffie attacking from above with a dive kick/spinning shuriken combo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YHP48v7vyg From there, FF7 director Naoki Hamaguchi introduced an extended look at raw gameplay, which focused on traveling the massive world map. Invoking the original game's PlayStation 1 roots, the Highwind flies over the world of Gaia, and players can pilot it wherever they wish. Once they reach a location of interest, they can choose a party from any of the eight playable characters, and then parachute down to the surface instantly. The demo then dives into a side quest in Gongaga featuring Sotetsu, a character featured in a FF7 Rebirth side quest. Yuffie, knowing Sotetsu from that side quest, has a special interaction with him, implying that some missions may play out differently depending on the characters brought to complete them. Along with the news of Final Fantasy VII Revelation's April 8 release date, the Steam page for the game dropped a few hints on what is coming after launch, with listings for story expansions featuring two key characters(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ffvii-revelation-dlc-feature-sephiroth-and-vince-extending-the-story-into-2028/).

🎮 PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Multi-platformLEGO PlayStation Design Revealed
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/e63b1d48/lego01.jpg.webp) Today’s State of Play revealed a new partnership between the brick-building toy makers at LEGO and the PlayStation brand. Following on the heels of other video game console models like the NES(https://gameinformer.com/2020/07/13/lego-teases-nes-building-kit-images-of-the-set-immediately-leak), Game Boy(https://gameinformer.com/2025/07/24/a-lego-game-boy-replica-comes-out-this-october), and Sega Genesis(https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/sega-genesis-console-40926), the new LEGO PlayStation looks like a nostalgic throwback focused on celebrating the origins of the original 1994 design. The LEGO PlayStation includes several features and gimmicks that should bring a smile to the face of gamers who recall that mid-'90s console. The set includes both an opening button, a light, and a controller that can be plugged into the larger set. Borrowing the idea from other successful brick-built recreation sets, the LEGO PlayStation also includes two hidden dioramas that nod to early successes for the PlayStation brand – one focused on Ape Escape and the other on Gran Turismo. As of the State of Play airing, LEGO hadn’t revealed too much more. However, in a subsequent posting to the LEGO official site(https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/playstation-72306), we learned that the piece feature 1911 pieces, is set to release on October 4, and will retail for $179.99. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/9bacee7e/lego02.jpg.webp)
