🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformPlayStation Is Reportedly Overhauling Live-Service Horizon Spin-Off Hunters Gathering Following Poor Playtest Feedback
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/02/05/a2668036/horizonhuntersgatheringaloyanderend.jpg.webp) Horizon Hunters Gathering, a live-service spin-off of Guerilla Games' Horizon series(https://gameinformer.com/2026/02/05/guerrilla-games-reveals-its-cooperative-horizon-multiplayer-game-horizon-hunters), was announced earlier this year to mixed reception. While it retains worldbuilding elements from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, the genre and art style are completely changed, and anecdotally, it seemed to alienate more than it attracted. That was before anyone had played the game, however. According to a report from Bloomberg(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-19/playstation-reboots-horizon-hunters-gathering-as-live-service-strategy-struggles?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTc4NzE0MjM0MSwiZXhwIjoxNzg3NzQ3MTQxLCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJUSzBOVElSS1YyVjUwMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiJCMUVBQkI5NjQ2QUM0REZFQTJBRkI4MjI1MzgyQTJFQSJ9.W2rmWr4vHOvYW2YsXBRftk6tzRuk5-lCzHVi21wLDU), playtest feedback has caused the developer to take a step back and reevaluate what the game should look like. The report comes from Jason Schreier, a seasoned reporter in the video game space. He cites anonymous sources familiar with Hunters Gathering's development, but who are not authorized to speak about it publicly. While Schreier's reporting has a very strong track record for accuracy, PlayStation has yet to confirm or deny the facts in his article and declined to comment. Game Informer has also reached out for comment, and this article will be updated should we receive a reply. "Following poor feedback in private testing earlier this year, the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope," the Bloomberg article reads. While the game is not yet cancelled, Schreier's sources indicate that the team has "through December to impress executives on their next milestone." Many of the game's developers are also being reassigned to a different project, to be evaluated at the end of the year. This rework of Hunters Gathering is a kinder fate than other multiplayer PlayStation projects have received. Best known for its critically acclaimed single-player experiences, the Japanese gaming giant has spent the 2020s trying to expand into the online live-service market to little success. Multiplayer spin-offs of God of War(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-16/sony-cancels-two-more-playstation-projects), Spider-Man, and The Last of Us(https://gameinformer.com/2023/12/14/naughty-dog-ceases-development-of-the-last-of-us-online) were all canned before their proper reveals. Destiny 2 got its final update this year(https://gameinformer.com/2026/05/21/destiny-2-is-getting-its-final-content-update-next-month-as-bungie-ends-active). Most infamously, Concord was shut down less than a week after its launch. While PlayStation's single-player games have fared better, fans of the Horizon series unfortunately have to wait a while for their next single-player outing as Aloy. According to Bloomberg, most of the Horizon Forbidden West team is working on Hunters Gathering, not the next mainline entry. "A tiny team has been plotting out the next single-player Horizon game but it remains years away from completion, according to the people familiar with the studio’s plans," Schreier writes. 🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformHorizon Multiplayer Game Being Rebooted To Remove Live-Service, Next Mainline Horizon Game “Years Away,” Report Says
A major development has come to light regarding Guerrilla's long-in-development live-service Horizon game, Horizon Hunters Gathering. After negative player feedback from the game's various tests(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/horizon-hunters-gatherings-next-test-starts-soon-heres-how-to-sign-up/1100-6539779/), the Amsterdam-based studio has been "working to reboot the game since June," Bloomberg(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-19/playstation-reboots-horizon-hunters-gathering-as-live-service-strategy-struggles?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTc4NzE0MjM0MSwiZXhwIjoxNzg3NzQ3MTQxLCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJUSzBOVElSS1YyVjUwMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiJCMUVBQkI5NjQ2QUM0REZFQTJBRkI4MjI1MzgyQTJFQSJ9.W2rmWr4vHOvYW2YsXBRftk6tzRuk5-lCzHVi21wLDU&leadSource=article-gifting) reported. The plan to reboot the game involves removing its live-service elements and shifting it to become "more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and far smaller scope," the report said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8MmDGZsWeA The report went on to say Guerrilla now has through December to "impress executives" in order for development to continue. Due to the paring down of the scope in the reboot, some developers working on Horizon Hunters Gathering are being "reassigned to a different project" that is due for evaluation by higher-ups by the end of the year. What that other game is remains a mystery, but the report added that a "tiny team" at Guerrilla is now "plotting out the next single-player Horizon game." This game is, however, "years away" from being done, sources said. What is Horizon Hunters Gathering? Announced in February this year, Horizon Hunters Gathering is a multiplayer game set in the Horizon universe, allowing up to three players in a group. It features a markedly different look from the main Horizon series, sporting more vibrant visuals and giving off Fortnite energy in terms of its looks. Players will work together to fight the deadly, animal-like machines that the Horizon series is known for. Guerrilla has said the game’s combat is “tactical, reactive, and deeply skill-based.” This was how the game was described upon its announcement, at least. It remains to be seen exactly how Horizon Hunters Gathering could change, beyond stripping out the live-service elements, given the reboot. Sony's struggles in live-service Like many other companies, PlayStation pushed into the very popular, potentially lucrative, and very competitive, live-service market by making a number of bets, and not all of them have paid off. At one point, Sony was planning a dozen live-service games, but the company later halved that(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-is-halving-the-number-of-playstation-live-service-games-that-it-aims-to-launch-by-march-2026/1100-6519039/) in a bid for quality over quantity. Some of the games that have been canceled so far have included The Last of Us Online(https://www.gamespot.com/games/the-last-of-us-online/), along with a live-service God of War and another live-service title from Bend.(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-cancels-two-games-including-a-live-service-god-of-war-report/1100-6528869/) There have been successes, too, mostly notably Helldivers 2. The game sold more than 20 million copies(https://alineaanalytics.substack.com/p/helldivers-2-sells-20m-copies). Sony’s multiplayer game Concord, on the other hand, failed to find an audience and was quickly taken offline, with its studio shuttered. Many are also wondering about the fate of the live-service game Fairgame$, following a number of key staff departures(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-live-service-game-fairgame-loses-another-key-developer/1100-6534409/).

🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformPlayStation Plus Is Removing 10 Games Soon, So Finish Them While You Can
Last week saw several new games announced for the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra- and Premium-tier subscribers, and as you'd expect, a few games are also on their way out. In total, 10 more games are leaving soon, although Sony hasn't listed an exact departure date yet. For reference, nine games are leaving the Game Catalog today, so you'll likely have a few weeks left to play the ones listed below. As for what's only going to be around for a little while longer? Say goodbye to a fun Persona spin-off, some Toy Story adventures, and a few tactical-RPGs. PlayStation Plus Game Catalog games leaving soon !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PS-Plus-leaving-soon.jpg?w=636) Grab 'em before they're gone. - EA Sports Madden NFL 26 - Persona 5 Tactica - Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 - Toukiden 2 - Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back - Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue - Toy Story 3 - Shadowrun Returns - Shadowrun Hong Kong: Extended Edition - Shadowrun Dragonfall: Director's Cut The removal of Toy Story games makes sense, as both Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue and Toy Story 3 are part of the upcoming Toy Story: Retro Roundup compilation(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/toy-story-5-isnt-getting-a-game-but-fans-are-still-eating-well/) coming to PC and consoles on October 15. That collection also includes the original film tie-in game that was released for Sega Genesis, the Game Boy Color edition of Toy Story 2, the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command video game--which is based on the underrated animated series spin-off--Toy Story Racer, and the official A Bug's Life game as a bonus. The Shadowrun games are also pretty great, as developer Harebrained Schemes put a neat spin on the tabletop source material and followed up on the 2013 release with two well-received expansions. If you're a fan of the Persona series, you'll also want to check out Persona 5 Tactica for how it reimagines the Persona 5 crew as cute little warriors summoned to a strange land and tasked with saving the day. It's not too dissimilar to Fire Emblem with its focus on tactics and grid-based movement, but it features a much smaller number of units taking to the battlefield. The other notable exit is Madden NFL 26(https://www.gamespot.com/games/madden-nfl-26/), but since a new game in the series launched earlier this month, you can imagine most people are focused on the newer release right now, as it introduces some sizable updates to gameplay. Next week, Sony is expected to reveal the next batch of free games for all PlayStation Plus subscribers in September, so don’t forget to check back to see what's on the way during the month when Green Day goes into hibernation(https://youtu.be/pGhwBFYtn1s). 🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformControl Resonant Still Comes Out Next Month, Unless You Want It On Disc
Remedy Entertainment has announced that Control Resonant "has gone gold." In other words, main development is complete, and the action-RPG is ready to arrive on September 24--but there's an unfortunate catch here. The physical edition of the title has actually been delayed almost a month to October 15. That means people who want the game on disc are going to have to wait a few weeks to play as Dylan Faden in the sequel. The staggered release between digital and physical for Control Resonant was revealed by Remedy on Bluesky(https://bsky.app/profile/remedygames.com/post/3mteiagzddp2c). In fact, there is a way to play the game even earlier on PS5(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/control-resonant-has-48-hours-early-access-but-only-on-ps5/). You can get two-day advanced access on Sony's system by preordering Control Resonant's digital deluxe edition(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/where-to-preorder-control-resonant/) for $70 (while the base edition costs $60). https://bsky.app/profile/remedygames.com/post/3mteiagzddp2c Buying physical versions of video games is a hot-button issue after Sony detailed last month that it's ending disc production in 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/). That all but guarantees that the eventual PS6 won't feature a disc drive. On top of that, Grand Theft Auto VI won't arrive on a disc at all(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-is-not-releasing-with-a-disc-and-that-just-makes-sense-in-2026/), even in the boxed edition. As for Control Resonant, it follows up 2019's Control and sees players taking on the role of Dylan, who's the sibling of the original game's Jesse Faden. There's no parry mechanic in the action-RPG(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/control-resonant-has-no-parry-mechanic-and-i-dont-know-how-to-feel-about-that/), as Remedy wants people to focus on offensive abilities. The Remedy title will also deal with trauma and redemption(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/control-resonant-deals-with-trauma-and-redemption/). Control Resonant is set to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformPlayStation’s wireless gaming speakers launch in November
Sony's Pulse Elevate wireless gaming speakers are launching on November 12th and will cost $219.99, the company announced on Tuesday. Announced nearly a year ago, the speakers are compatible with a PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, and Mac, and they include "studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers" that offer "lifelike sound across the entire audible spectrum," Sony says. &8230;
