Overview & Key Takeaways

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has been delayed into early 2027, so we'll have to wait and see if it can redeem the franchise's video game woes

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has reemerged over a year after its announcement, although that also came with the news that it will now launch in 2027.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a real-time strategy game based on the HBO show. The RTS title is being developed by PlaySide, the publisher of Mouse: P.I. For Hire, and was supposed to release this year. It has flown under the radar since its reveal during a crowded Summer Game Fest 2025 kickoff showcase, but attracted some attention again when a delay to "early 2027" was confirmed last week.

"War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027," PlaySide stated in a Steam blog post. "We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans. This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for."

Alongside the delay announcement, PlaySide's post features brief gameplay clips showcasing its factions, hero abilities, heavy cavalry units, and large maps. If you enjoy series like Total War, War for Westeros looks like itoffers a similar RTS experience with Game of Thrones flair. If PlaySide can deliver, War for Westeros could easily become the best game based on this franchise yet.

Despite Game of Thrones' popularity as a franchise over the past decade, Warner Bros. has failed to properly capitalize on that in the video game medium. Telltale's oft-forgotten Game of Thrones title and Reigns: Game of Thrones were pretty good, but otherwise the series has been relegated mostly to mobile games that aren't for everyone.

While Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is reportedly prioritizing Game of Thrones as a primary franchise going forward, War for Westeros should still launch long before whatever comes from that effort. While delays are sometimes disappointing, in War for Westeros' case, it was actually a nice reminder that the game exists and is heading toward a full release on Windows PC in 2027.

Wardogs Has A Massive Start On Steam, But Players Face Brutal Server Queues

A big new military FPS, Wardogs (not to be confused with the 2016 Jonah Hill/Miles Teller crime-comedy War Dogs) launched today in early access(https://store.steampowered.com/app/1867240/WARDOGS/) on Steam, and it's off to a hot start. The shooter reached 300,000 peak concurrent users on Steam(https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed) right out of the gate and the $40 game is currently Steam's No. 1 best-seller. Pretty impressive for a game that the developer told you not to buy(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/shooter-climbing-steam-charts-lists-10-reasons-not-to-buy-it/). Given the flood of players, developer Bulkhead instituted a server queue system, and this quickly became something of a meme on social media. Players shared screenshots of the queue and their place in it--some people reported having more than 300,000 people in line in front of them(https://x.com/ModernWarzone/status/2098098285244207270). Yeesh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpQnZgZCIo8 Bulkhead responded to the brutal queueing situation, saying it was partly due(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098088030686879852) to the developer being "rate limited." The company said it was working with Valve to resolve this limit and get an increase in line with "larger titles." Things got worse, temporarily albeit, for some, as Bulkhead made the decision to kick everyone from the queue(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098096580670759056) as a fix that, in theory, would help more players get into the game faster. Bulkhead boss Joe Brammer gave an update on the queuing situation, saying the queue itself is not "specifically broken," but instead he said Wardogs didn't get the kind of treatment that AAA games receive when it comes to rate limits. "Hang in there," Brammer said. https://twitter.com/Brammflakes/status/2098101353595724112 That wasn't the extent of the launch-day issues, as people reported getting banned for seemingly no reason. Bulkhead said it's aware of these "incorrect bans"(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098080435687317592) and is working to address them immediately. Wardogs is a large-scale military FPS featuring 100 players, divided into three teams, on a map battling it out in a fictional version of Eastern Europe. In addition to launching Wardogs into early access, Bulkhead revealed that the game's console edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will be released in 2028.
