Star Ocean: The Second Story R Gets Switch 2 Edition, But With The Usual Square Enix Caveats

Overview & Key Takeaways

Star Ocean The Second Story R Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Square Enix

Square Enix has surprise-released a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Star Ocean: The Second Story R, its sci-fi RPG that launched on Switch (and PlayStation and PC) in 2023. This Switch 2 version boasts 1080p resolution, both docked and in handheld mode, with a 60 FPS frame rate, making it a big improvement over the significantly lower resolution and 30 FPS frame rate of the Switch version. But, this edition comes with the usual Square Enix caveats.

Similar to the Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II Switch 2 editions announced earlier this week, anyone who wants to play this Star Ocean remake on Switch 2 will have to pay $49.99; there is no upgrade path for owners of the Switch 1 version, and your save data does not transfer. It's another step down this disappointing trend for Square Enix, which expects players to fork over more money to play a game they already own on a new system – the company doesn't even opt for low-cost upgrade paths, something even Nintendo itself does with games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and more. Maybe Square Enix is seeing enough purchases to justify it, but it's not a player-friendly practice either way.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a remake of the original Star Ocean: The Second Story, which launched on PlayStation in the U.S. in 1999. It's about a Federation officer named Claude C. Kenny who is mysteriously transported to a mystical planet. There, he searches for a way home but is drawn into a quest to save the planet by a young girl who lives there, becoming wrapped up in an ancient prophecy in the process.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch 2, Switch, and PC.

Two Nintendo Directs Air Next Week, And One Of Them Celebrates Zelda's 40th Anniversary

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2023/11/07/6a96790c/zelda.jpg.webp) Apparently not to be outdone by PlayStation airing back-to-back State of Play presentations this week(https://gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/09/03/everything-announced-at-the-september-2026-playstation-state-of-play), Nintendo has announced two Direct broadcasts scheduled for next week. This includes a traditional Nintendo Direct and a special Direct celebrating The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary. The news was first announced on the Nintendo Today app. On Tuesday, September 8, The Legend of Zelda: 40th Anniversary Direct airs at 7:00 a.m. PT/10:00 a.m. ET. It will last approximately 30 minutes. Nintendo has not detailed what announcements to expect, but it's fair to assume updates on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake(https://gameinformer.com/nintendo-direct/2026/06/09/the-nintendo-switch-2-remake-of-the-legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time) and the live-action film The Legend of Zelda(https://gameinformer.com/2026/05/13/the-legend-of-zelda-movie-premiere-date-moved-up-one-week) are on the table. The next day, Wednesday, September 9, a standard Nintendo Direct airs at 7:00 a.m. PT/10:00 a.m. ET. This presentation will run for roughly 45 minutes. It’s anyone’s guess as to what to expect. Announced upcoming Nintendo first-party/Switch-exclusive projects, other than the aforementioned Ocarina of Time, include Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave(https://gameinformer.com/preview/2026/08/13/a-slow-build-that-hasnt-quite-hooked-me-yet-but-i-want-to-keep-playing), which launches on September 17, as well as Xenoblade Genesis(https://gameinformer.com/nintendo-direct/2026/06/09/xenoblade-genesis-revealed-and-it-launches-on-nintendo-switch-2-next) and Pokémon Winds and Waves(https://gameinformer.com/pokemon-presents/2026/02/27/pokemon-winds-and-waves-is-arriving-next-year), both of which arrive next year. Nintendo has a penchant for announcing major projects with little to no prior hints or leaks, so it's fair to expect just about anything could be showcased next week. What announcements do you hope/expect to see at these Nintendo Directs? Let us know in the comments! !(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/09/04/5e263dc6/zelda-direct-nintendo-today.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/09/04/c17336c7/nintendo-today-nintendo-direct-september2026.jpg.webp)

LEGO PlayStation Design Revealed

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/e63b1d48/lego01.jpg.webp) Today’s State of Play revealed a new partnership between the brick-building toy makers at LEGO and the PlayStation brand. Following on the heels of other video game console models like the NES(https://gameinformer.com/2020/07/13/lego-teases-nes-building-kit-images-of-the-set-immediately-leak), Game Boy(https://gameinformer.com/2025/07/24/a-lego-game-boy-replica-comes-out-this-october), and Sega Genesis(https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/sega-genesis-console-40926), the new LEGO PlayStation looks like a nostalgic throwback focused on celebrating the origins of the original 1994 design. The LEGO PlayStation includes several features and gimmicks that should bring a smile to the face of gamers who recall that mid-'90s console. The set includes both an opening button, a light, and a controller that can be plugged into the larger set. Borrowing the idea from other successful brick-built recreation sets, the LEGO PlayStation also includes two hidden dioramas that nod to early successes for the PlayStation brand – one focused on Ape Escape and the other on Gran Turismo. As of the State of Play airing, LEGO hadn’t revealed too much more. However, in a subsequent posting to the LEGO official site(https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/playstation-72306), we learned that the piece feature 1911 pieces, is set to release on October 4, and will retail for $179.99. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/9bacee7e/lego02.jpg.webp)
