Xbox’s Console Future Looks Bleak In New Industry Forecast

GameSpot » All News RSS FeedDarryn Bonthuys6 min read(about 2 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Next year could be a grim one for Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, as console sales are expected to dramatically decline in 2027 by almost 20%. Thanks to component shortages, video game consoles like the Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S have only gotten more expensive over time--a complete reversal of how systems used to get cheaper the longer they were on the market.

According to a report from S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan (via GamesIndustry.Biz), the math is simple: more expensive machines, fewer consumers able to buy them. The firm is predicting that console shipments will fall to about 27.1 million units by 2027, but it could recover to 37.4 million units by 2030 if the component crisis begins to stabilize by 2028. This would allow Sony and Microsoft to release their next-gen consoles--the PS6 and Project Helix, respectively--and S&P Global Market Intelligence analyst Neil Barbour projected that the consoles will sell for between $600 and $800 each.

"For now, the market faces a compounding problem: hardware that is either too old or too expensive for the median consumer, a software slate that is thin outside a handful of tentpole releases, and a macro environment that keeps any meaningful price relief off the table," Barbour said to GamesIndustry.Biz.

For the Switch 2, S&P has forecast that it'll sell 17.1 million units in 2026, while Nintendo's own expectations have sales pegged at 16.5 million units sold in the console's second fiscal year. That would make for a decline of 16.9% compared to its launch year, but it's not just the looming $50 price hike in September contributing to this. S&P believes that the lack of a killer game for 2026 is hindering Switch 2 sales, although the launch of Pokemon Winds and Waves in 2027 could see a spike in sales. Nintendo is also rumored to be exploring an OLED version of the Switch 2, but the potential price for it is said to be a topic of concern at the company.

As for the PS5, recent price hikes haven't helped the console improve its recent sales, either. S&P's forecast is a 15.2% decrease year-on-year, with Sony likely shipping 13.2 million units in 2026--a big drop compared to how Sony shipped 17.1 million PS5s in 2025.

Xbox could be hardest hit, as the outlook doesn't look positive for the Microsoft gaming division. S&P says that Microsoft shipped 3.2 million Xbox Series X|S consoles last year--a figure that Microsoft has never publicly revealed, as it's notoriously cagey with sales numbers--and that was the lowest annual total to date. S&P predicts 2.5 million Xbox Series X|S units will be sold in 2026, followed by "a rapid wind-down toward zero" as it prepares for a next-gen console launch.

With Project Helix expected to be expensive due to its ability to support both console and PC marketplaces, S&P has forecast launch-year sales of 2 million units, reaching roughly 7.3 million units by 2030.

Barbour added that the sales outcome could look different, and that S&P is "splitting the difference" between a traditional Xbox console successor and a living-room PC that has been given an Xbox certification. That 2028 launch year for next-gen consoles is looking more solid--although anything can change in these turbulent times--as court documents and statements have the expected starting period of the next generation of consoles penciled in for 2028.

Rumored 3D Mario Game Could Finally Be Revealed At Tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct

The big September Nintendo Direct(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/two-nintendo-directs-announced-for-next-week-including-a-zelda-presentation/) is right around the corner, and so far, the only thing that Nintendo has confirmed about it is that it'll run for 45 minutes. Beyond that, the company is keeping a tight lid on tomorrow's broadcast, where it's expected to make a few big reveals that could help soften the blow of a $50 increase to the Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-xbox-and-switch-2-heres-how-their-prices-have-changed-since-launch/) console. That hasn't stopped leakers from making some bold predictions, as one insider claims that we could finally see a new 3D Mario game revealed. Malo932--who correctly predicted the reveal of the recent Star Fox game and the remake of Ocarina of Time--also correctly revealed that two Nintendo Directs were coming this week. Their latest leaks (via Centro Leaks) have teased not only a 3D Mario but also a new Super Smash Bros. game, the return of the Nintendogs franchise, Mario Kart World DLC featuring Fox McCloud in action, and a brand-new Star Fox game. https://twitter.com/CentroLeaks/status/2096391885191282882 Another prominent leaker, NecroFelipe, has also added that Luigi's Mansion 4 is reportedly in development. That would make for a sizable stack of games from Nintendo, but even if they are real, could we see all of them in tomorrow's Direct? NecroFelipe isn't so sure, as they wrote on X(https://x.com/necrolipe/status/2096645953658773563) that Nintendo won't play its entire hand in one Direct. Malo932 has also deleted their recent YouTube comments since then and changed their display name to "Stop" (via Kotaku(https://kotaku.com/big-rumors-are-circulating-ahead-of-the-september-2026-nintendo-direct-and-a-new-leaker-just-nuked-their-youtube-comments-2000731878)), suggesting that something is afoot. Did Nintendo's lawyers finally close in on them? We'll have to wait until September 9 to find out, but if previous September Directs are any indication, this year's edition should have plenty of games from Nintendo and its third-party partners to check out. Don't forget, there's also a Legend of Zelda-themed Direct(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-legend-of-zelda-40th-anniversary-direct-start-time-how-to-watch-and-what-to-expect/) kicking off today.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Extended Gameplay Look Highlights Wutai, Highwind Exploration, Queen's Blood, Side Quests, And More🎮 PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Multi-platform

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Extended Gameplay Look Highlights Wutai, Highwind Exploration, Queen's Blood, Side Quests, And More

!Final Fantasy VII Revelation April 8 2027 Release Date PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X/S Nintendo Switch 2 PC(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/d8c25029/ff701.jpg.webp) Square Enix has released another trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation(https://gameinformer.com/product/final-fantasy-vii-revelation), this time a whopping 10-minute look at the game's characters, story, setting, and so much more. Plus, the trailer also revealed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. The trailer begins by highlighting each playable party member alongside new looks at the game's expanded combat, then breaks to reveal the April 8 release date. After that, director Naoki Hamaguchi(https://gameinformer.com/sgf-2026/2026/06/12/we-asked-final-fantasy-vii-revelation-director-naoki-hamaguchi-whats-next-for) appeared on camera to introduce the rest of the trailer, and we learn more about how Cloud and Co. will jump from the Highwind airship and parachute down to the planet below, Fortnite-style. Once on the ground, you can hop onto your trusty chocobo and sprint/glide/fly around as far as the eye can see. Plus, this chocobo can be an active participant in combat now, and of course, you can also just hop off and fight with your character's weapons, too. Check out the release date trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation below: For the uninitiated, the FITS (Function-Integrated Tactical Suitware) system is the new addition to Revelation's combat, and it's basically this game's Job system, allowing different party members to slot into various classes like warrior, black mage, and more. You can access your party's FITS on the Highwind, which is your base of operations in Revelation. To head to a new location, pilot the Highwind there in real time, and when you're ready to jump, hop on out and parachute down to the ground below. You'll be bringing the Highwind to returning locations like Junon and new ones, too, like Wutai, Yuffie's ninja-centric homeland. This trailer offered a great look at Wutai, which looks like a fantastical take on feudal Japan, and Yuffie's grapple gun makes traversing its towering buildings a breeze. In addition to Wutai, Revelation features several new areas, such as Rocket Town, though the trailer stops short of showing it. However, the trailer does bring us back to Gongaga, which first appeared in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Here, Square Enix explains that side quests in locations like Gongaga will reveal more about what's happening in the world, including the whereabouts of other characters from the wider Final Fantasy VII universe of games and media. Strangely, Revelation lets you to speed up cutscenes by 2x, allowing you to blitz through narrative moments (though I'm not sure why you would do that outside of, potentially, repeated playthroughs). It turns out, side quests and the unfolding narratives associated with them will change based on who you are controlling in the party. Cissnei reacts differently when working with Vincent, for example, versus Yuffie, but Square Enix says players can discover that in April. One of the best parts of Rebirth, the optional but incredible Queen's Blood card game, returns in Revelation. This time, Red XIII is the protagonist of this Queen's Blood saga, and during his adventure, he'll encounter powerful opponents that turn standard bouts on their heads. To close out the trailer, Hamaguchi asks that players get through Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth ahead of Revelation's launch in April. Final Fantasy VII Revelation hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 Is Out This October With A Very Special Guest🎮 PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Multi-platform

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 Is Out This October With A Very Special Guest

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/warhammer-40000-boltgun-2-announced-very-unexpected-spin-off-out-now/1100-6531732/) is one of the most highly anticipated games in the entire Warhammer franchise, and we'll be able to play it very soon. Even better, it's going to feature a guest appearance by one of the most legendary composers in the history of first-person shooters. On October 14, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 will release across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Switch 2 release to follow "shortly after" the other versions, according to the official announcement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRCcxzt-j8A If you like the tune blasting in the game's release-date trailer, there's a good reason for that: Mick Gordon(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/after-a-decade-of-waiting-mick-gordon-is-finally-performing-doom-live/) of Doom and Wolfenstein fame is responsible. His composition is described as a "cameo" appearance and will play during the final boss fight. If that doesn't get you pumped to slay the enemies of the Emperor, nothing will. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 expands on the first game's boomer-shooter action, letting you play as either Ultramarine Malum Caedo like in the first game or as Battle Sister Nyra Veyrath. You'll be going up against the daemonic demigod Vashtorr as well as countless other enemies, and if it's anything like the first game, you can expect to be turning lots of them into tiny pieces of bloody flesh. The first game was also brutally difficult, and we expect the sequel to follow suit.
