Overview & Key Takeaways

Valve's PC gaming platform is full of great deals, regardless of how much of a backlog you might have

It's that time of year again. On Thursday morning, Valve's PC gaming storefront will be awash with green price tags advertising huge discounts on nearly every game on the platform. It's perfect timing for fans who recently signed up for the Steam Machine reservation list โ€” the system starts shipping out on June 29. What better way to put the new hardware through its paces than with a shiny new game?

But even if you're not shelling out for Valve's console, the sale is still worth a look. In case you need some suggestions, here are some of the most noteworthy deals worth splurging on. The list includes some of the best RPGs ever made, GOTY contenders, recent hits, and more.

Beyond these discounts, there's plenty of reason to muck around on the Steam app as well. When you first sign in, the platform should alert you to discounts on DLC for games you already own, titles played by your friends, and experiences that Steam's algorithm has determined you might like. The top sellers chart, which is visible when you scroll down the main page, is also a great way of seeing what other people think is a good deal.

The Steam Summer Sale runs until July 9.

Wardogs Has A Massive Start On Steam, But Players Face Brutal Server Queues

A big new military FPS, Wardogs (not to be confused with the 2016 Jonah Hill/Miles Teller crime-comedy War Dogs) launched today in early access(https://store.steampowered.com/app/1867240/WARDOGS/) on Steam, and it's off to a hot start. The shooter reached 300,000 peak concurrent users on Steam(https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed) right out of the gate and the $40 game is currently Steam's No. 1 best-seller. Pretty impressive for a game that the developer told you not to buy(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/shooter-climbing-steam-charts-lists-10-reasons-not-to-buy-it/). Given the flood of players, developer Bulkhead instituted a server queue system, and this quickly became something of a meme on social media. Players shared screenshots of the queue and their place in it--some people reported having more than 300,000 people in line in front of them(https://x.com/ModernWarzone/status/2098098285244207270). Yeesh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpQnZgZCIo8 Bulkhead responded to the brutal queueing situation, saying it was partly due(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098088030686879852) to the developer being "rate limited." The company said it was working with Valve to resolve this limit and get an increase in line with "larger titles." Things got worse, temporarily albeit, for some, as Bulkhead made the decision to kick everyone from the queue(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098096580670759056) as a fix that, in theory, would help more players get into the game faster. Bulkhead boss Joe Brammer gave an update on the queuing situation, saying the queue itself is not "specifically broken," but instead he said Wardogs didn't get the kind of treatment that AAA games receive when it comes to rate limits. "Hang in there," Brammer said. https://twitter.com/Brammflakes/status/2098101353595724112 That wasn't the extent of the launch-day issues, as people reported getting banned for seemingly no reason. Bulkhead said it's aware of these "incorrect bans"(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098080435687317592) and is working to address them immediately. Wardogs is a large-scale military FPS featuring 100 players, divided into three teams, on a map battling it out in a fictional version of Eastern Europe. In addition to launching Wardogs into early access, Bulkhead revealed that the game's console edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will be released in 2028.
