GTA 6 is a "single-player experience" only, Rockstar clarifies

Overview & Key Takeaways

Grand Theft Auto 6 is single-player only, Rockstar confirms, leaving questions about the future of GTA Online when GTA 6 releases in November 2026.

Rockstar Games finally answered some burning questions about the November release of Grand Theft Auto 6, detailing price, special edition bonuses, and pre-loading details on Wednesday ahead of the game's pre-orders going live on June 25. Rockstar also made one thing explicitly clear in its latest round of updates: Grand Theft Auto 6 is a single-player experience.

That detail is included in game descriptions on PlayStation.com and Xbox.com, after detailing one of the pre-order bonuses for Grand Theft Auto 6: a free month of GTA Plus, Rockstar's subscription service that provides benefits for Grand Theft Auto Online.

Here's Rockstar's official language:

Receive a month of GTA+ with your pre-order; must be redeemed within 180 days after placing your pre-order. Subscription redemption is not available to child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content. You will receive a pop-up notification on your console when your GTA+ subscription month is available to redeem. Open the Store, select your profile icon in the top left corner, and select “Offers & credits” to find and redeem this offer. Limited to one redemption per Platform Account.

Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.

GTA Plus subscribers also get access to the GTA Plus Games Library, which offers a selection of classic Rockstar Games titles, including Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption, and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

Rockstar's confirmation that Grand Theft Auto 6 is strictly a single-player experience leaves the future of Grand Theft Auto Online uncertain. The popular online mode is a cash cow for Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive, and is regularly updated with new content for its rabid fan base. Rockstar will release a major update for GTA Online, The Kortz Center Heist, in July. Rockstar shows no signs of slowing down on support for GTA Online, which will likely stand alongside GTA 6 for many years to come.

When Grand Theft Auto 5 was released in September 2013, it was a single-player experience. But Rockstar was developing GTA Online in tandem with GTA 5, and released the online multiplayer component two weeks after the open-world crime drama launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Rockstar has continued to update GTA Online since then, and released the multiplayer mode as a stand-alone download in 2021.

In time, some of the new and unique features of Grand Theft Auto 6 may ultimately come to GTA Online. Rockstar is certainly pushing its audience to upgrade to the Enhanced versions of GTA 5 that were released on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, making that update free. But Rockstar and Take-Two know not to mess with success; when GTA 6 finally arrives this November, then maybe we'll find out about changes to GTA Online and maybe even get that highly anticipated PC version as well.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X on Nov. 19.

Xbox picks up Kojima’s Physint after PlayStation dropped it

Xbox will now publish Physint, an upcoming game from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, after PlayStation decided to cancel it. The unexpected swap came in a flurry of announcements from PlayStation, Xbox, Kojima Productions, and Kojima himself. Sony, which published both of Kojima Productions' previous Death Stranding games, framed it as a "difficult decision to &8230;

Kojima’s Physint Dropped By PlayStation, Rescued By Xbox

Sony has revealed today that it will no longer be working with Kojima Productions on stealth action game Physint(https://www.gamespot.com/games/physint/), while Kojima announced that Xbox has stepped up to rescue the project. The change in publishers means both of Kojima's upcoming projects are now being made in partnership with Xbox, a departure from his long history of developing games for the PlayStation. PlayStation's official statement didn't say why it chose to end its support of Physint, leaving gamers to speculate on the reasons behind its shock exit. "We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game," Sony said, adding, "we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future." https://twitter.com/PlayStation/status/2097875212427735146 Kojima posted from his personal account with more details, saying that PlayStation cancelled Physint as of mid-June this year, and the new collaboration with Xbox came as a result of the studio's determination to keep the project alive. https://twitter.com/HIDEOKOJIMAEN/status/2097877506401681753 "We're honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint," said Xbox CEO Asha Sharma(https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/09/09/xbox-and-kojima-productions-expand-partnership-to-publish-physint/) in a statement. "His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox." Though it may be surprising after Kojima's long history of collaborating with PlayStation, from his work at Konami to both Death Stranding games, Kojima also has an existing working relationship with Xbox, which is publishing his upcoming horror game OD. Xbox's statement added that its collaboration with Kojima Productions will go beyond these two games, also collaborating "across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences." Kojima assured fans that despite the change in publishers, development on Physint "is ongoing and will continue moving forward," though the game is still likely in an early phase of development. Kojima has said that Physint will be his return to Metal Gear-like action-espionage games(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kojima-explains-why-physint-is-his-return-to-mgs-like-action-espionage/1100-6531835/), adding that it would use cutting-edge technology to blur the lines between movies and video games(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/hideo-kojimas-physint-is-still-in-conceptual-stage/1100-6533807/).
