Neopets are back and coming to Fortnite

Overview & Key Takeaways

Epic Games reveals that Neopets are coming to Fortnite in July in Sidekick pet form.

Anything and everything will eventually come to Fortnite, including the browser-based virtual pet browser game Neopets. Epic Games announced Tuesday that the enduring virtual pet Aisha from Neopets is coming to Fortnite next month. Given Aisha's stature, they're likely to come to the game as one of Fortnite's diminutive Sidekicks.

Epic has added dozens of Sidekicks to Fortnite since introducing the cosmetics in November. The current pets include options like dogs, cats, birds, and dragons, plus licensed characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, the Toy Story Alien, Adventure Time's Peppermint Butler, Rick & Morty's Snowball, and Itchy from The Simpsons.

It's not clear yet how Neopets' Aisha will roll out, but Millennials everywhere who fondly remember caring for virtual pets on their parents' computer are probably setting aside some V-Bucks just in case. (They probably cost just one avocado toast, anyway.)

Neopets officially launched in 1999 and was created by Adam and Donna Powell. The virtual pet website quickly grew in popularity, and captured the attention of young players. In its heyday, Neopets served as an early internet platform for kids to build communities and create around an overarching story filled with adorable creatures and faeries.

Over the past 27 years, ownership of Neopets has changed hands multiple times, and since 2023, it has been owned by World of Neopia. The company helped to exhume a slew of classic Neopets Flash games as part of a revival of the brand that also includes a Pokémon-like trading card game. Soon, that revival will spread to Fortnite and... who knows where else if Epic's customers spend the right amount of V-Bucks.

Neopets' Aisha comes to Fortnite on July 2.

Wardogs Has A Massive Start On Steam, But Players Face Brutal Server Queues

A big new military FPS, Wardogs (not to be confused with the 2016 Jonah Hill/Miles Teller crime-comedy War Dogs) launched today in early access(https://store.steampowered.com/app/1867240/WARDOGS/) on Steam, and it's off to a hot start. The shooter reached 300,000 peak concurrent users on Steam(https://store.steampowered.com/charts/mostplayed) right out of the gate and the $40 game is currently Steam's No. 1 best-seller. Pretty impressive for a game that the developer told you not to buy(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/shooter-climbing-steam-charts-lists-10-reasons-not-to-buy-it/). Given the flood of players, developer Bulkhead instituted a server queue system, and this quickly became something of a meme on social media. Players shared screenshots of the queue and their place in it--some people reported having more than 300,000 people in line in front of them(https://x.com/ModernWarzone/status/2098098285244207270). Yeesh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpQnZgZCIo8 Bulkhead responded to the brutal queueing situation, saying it was partly due(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098088030686879852) to the developer being "rate limited." The company said it was working with Valve to resolve this limit and get an increase in line with "larger titles." Things got worse, temporarily albeit, for some, as Bulkhead made the decision to kick everyone from the queue(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098096580670759056) as a fix that, in theory, would help more players get into the game faster. Bulkhead boss Joe Brammer gave an update on the queuing situation, saying the queue itself is not "specifically broken," but instead he said Wardogs didn't get the kind of treatment that AAA games receive when it comes to rate limits. "Hang in there," Brammer said. https://twitter.com/Brammflakes/status/2098101353595724112 That wasn't the extent of the launch-day issues, as people reported getting banned for seemingly no reason. Bulkhead said it's aware of these "incorrect bans"(https://x.com/WARDOGS/status/2098080435687317592) and is working to address them immediately. Wardogs is a large-scale military FPS featuring 100 players, divided into three teams, on a map battling it out in a fictional version of Eastern Europe. In addition to launching Wardogs into early access, Bulkhead revealed that the game's console edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will be released in 2028.
