PS5 owners are facing massive SSD storage price hikes

Polygon RSS FeedPatricia Hernandez2 min read(3 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Whether you're buying 1TB or 8TB, expect to shell out a lot of money for any PS5 storage upgrades, based on Sandisk's new drives.

All the major consoles have undergone price hikes, but compared to PC gamers, console owners have been relatively sheltered from the rise in tech component costs. If you're a PlayStation 5 user who is looking to upgrade your console's memory storage, though, the artificial intelligence-driven component shortage is about to feel more real than ever.

SanDisk just announced the Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe, which is the PS5's officially licensed storage option formerly sold under the WD_Black label. Here's the price breakdown for the new SSD:

  • 1 TB — $379.99
  • 2 TB — $759.99
  • 4 TB — $1,499.99
  • 8 TB — $2,959.99

Incredibly, SanDisk's page suggests that each of these models is discounted from their true price. Most people probably won't be shelling out for the top-of-the line 8 TB option that can comfortably fit around 200 games, according to The Verge. It's still absolutely wild to know that the 8 TB drive is fully priced at $3,699.99.

In 2025, that same SSD would have only set you back $639.99, according to PCPartPicker. The lowest-end SSD option costs about half the price of a PS5; the highest-end option is more expensive than purchasing multiple PS5s. Every single storage option has seen a price hike of well over 100%.

The kicker? It's just going to get worse. The world continues to brace itself for Valve's eventual Steam Machine price announcement.

For now, you might be wondering if a PS5 SSD upgrade is even worth it. Personally, I enjoyed seeing all my PS5 games load faster with a 2 TB SSD upgrade. It's also nice not to have to constantly delete games to make room for new ones. Notably, I only paid a meager $249.99 (!) for my PS5's internal SSD back in 2022. If you're a PS5 Digital Edition owner with only 825 GB of storage, your pricing calculus is inherently more complicated.

The way things are going, I won't be shocked when, a year from now, we'll all look back on these prices with a tinge of nostalgia over how good things used to be.

The New Gundam Game Has A Collector’s Edition Just For Gunpla Sickos Like Me

Gundam Rogue Orbit(https://www.gamespot.com/games/gundam-rogue-orbit/) is a break from tradition for Bandai Namco, as new entries in the franchise typically debut as an anime series first, then as a line of collectible model kits. But this Gundam is arriving first as a video game--one that was shown in more detail today during the September PlayStation State of Play broadcast(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-state-of-play-september-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-games-and-trailers/). If you're a Gundam fan, fret not, because at least one part of the traditional Gundam experience is being kept intact if you buy the $160 Rogue Orbit collector's edition. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Gundam-CE.jpg?w=636) Gundam Rogue Orbit Collector's Edition Like other special editions from Bandai Namco, Gundam Rogue Orbit combines a physical copy of the game with a few physical in-game goodies. It's the inclusion of a High-Grade model kit based on the new Gundam Helix mobile suit that could make this collector's edition sought after, as it will be exclusive to the game. Gundam model kits aren't usually hard to come by as Bandai Namco regularly keeps store shelves restocked with them, but the HG Helix model looks like a rare exception to that rule. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiPllyLIvSo If you are planning to grab one, it's worth noting that HG Gundam model kits are 1/144-scale figures and are designed to appeal to casual builders with their moderate detail, minimal foil stickers, and durable design. You won't need too many tools to build one either, and the Helix design features a lot of panels and other mechanical details, so that could be a nice kit to build. The new trailer for the game also teased other shells that you can apply to the Helix to shake up its look, including an RX-78-2 skin and a red Zaku-inspired look that would make Char Aznable proud. Aside from the model, you'll also get a poster, reversible cover art, a pack of five promo cards, a steel case for the game disc, and DLC that includes 14 different color patterns for the Helix in the game. You won't have to wait too much longer to play it, as Gundam Rogue Orbit launches on March 5, 2027, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
