Marathon's struggles lead Sony to take $560 million loss on Bungie

Overview & Key Takeaways

Sony's acquisition of Bungie isn't paying off. As Marathon struggles and Destiny 2 flails, the PlayStation company reveals big losses on Bungie.

Sony's $3.6 billion buyout of Bungie is not going well for the PlayStation maker. As reported in Sony's latest earnings, Bungie's owner recorded an 88.6 billion yen ($565 million) impairment loss against the developer behind Marathon and Destiny 2. That whopping figure is included in Sony's fourth quarter earnings, which ended on March 31, or about four weeks after Marathon launched.

For the full year, Sony marked a 120.1 billion yen ($768 million) impairment loss against Bungie.

"Earnings from Bungie's title portfolio did not reach our expectations, so we downwardly revised our business plan and impaired the full amount of the fixed assets related to Bungie except for goodwill," Sony CFO and corporate executive officer Lin Tao said in comments. According to Investopedia, an impairment refers to "an unexpected and permanent drop in a fixed or intangible asset's value to a market value that's less than what's recorded on a company's balance sheet. The amount is recorded as a loss on the income statement." In other words, Bungie's value is much less than what Sony paid for it.

Bungie's latest game Marathon launched on March 5 and has struggled to find the success that the developer's Destiny games did. On Steam, Marathon peaked at 77,358 concurrent players in its first month, and is now hovering between 4,000 and 17,000 concurrent players based on data from Steam Charts. Destiny 2 peaked at 316,651 players on Steam at its height, according to Steam Charts. Despite largely positive reviews from critics and players, Marathon hasn't found a large, mainstream audience.

Sony's Tao acknowledged the game's performance in official comments, intimating that Sony remains committed to Marathon's ongoing development.

"Player reception to Marathon is strong, with the game receiving a Metacritic score of 82 and more than 90% of the player reviews on Steam being positive. Engagement metrics such as retention also remain at a high level," Tao said. "Going forward, we aim to improve the performance of the game by working to retain highly engaged core users through the introduction of additional content, further improvements in the gameplay experience, and expansion of the user base."

In one recent concession for Marathon players, Bungie just made one of the game's best sponsored Cryo Archive kits a free weekly download.

Marathon is available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

A GOTY nomination is a long shot, but the multiplayer category is Bungie’s to lose

The New Gundam Game Has A Collector’s Edition Just For Gunpla Sickos Like Me

Gundam Rogue Orbit(https://www.gamespot.com/games/gundam-rogue-orbit/) is a break from tradition for Bandai Namco, as new entries in the franchise typically debut as an anime series first, then as a line of collectible model kits. But this Gundam is arriving first as a video game--one that was shown in more detail today during the September PlayStation State of Play broadcast(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-state-of-play-september-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-games-and-trailers/). If you're a Gundam fan, fret not, because at least one part of the traditional Gundam experience is being kept intact if you buy the $160 Rogue Orbit collector's edition. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Gundam-CE.jpg?w=636) Gundam Rogue Orbit Collector's Edition Like other special editions from Bandai Namco, Gundam Rogue Orbit combines a physical copy of the game with a few physical in-game goodies. It's the inclusion of a High-Grade model kit based on the new Gundam Helix mobile suit that could make this collector's edition sought after, as it will be exclusive to the game. Gundam model kits aren't usually hard to come by as Bandai Namco regularly keeps store shelves restocked with them, but the HG Helix model looks like a rare exception to that rule. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiPllyLIvSo If you are planning to grab one, it's worth noting that HG Gundam model kits are 1/144-scale figures and are designed to appeal to casual builders with their moderate detail, minimal foil stickers, and durable design. You won't need too many tools to build one either, and the Helix design features a lot of panels and other mechanical details, so that could be a nice kit to build. The new trailer for the game also teased other shells that you can apply to the Helix to shake up its look, including an RX-78-2 skin and a red Zaku-inspired look that would make Char Aznable proud. Aside from the model, you'll also get a poster, reversible cover art, a pack of five promo cards, a steel case for the game disc, and DLC that includes 14 different color patterns for the Helix in the game. You won't have to wait too much longer to play it, as Gundam Rogue Orbit launches on March 5, 2027, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
