After a glitch accidentally gave away a beloved RPG for free, the developer is letting you keep it

InExile's busy with Clockwork Revolution, but some of you can play its classic Wasteland game for free.

Two weeks ago, a "glitch" caused one of developer inExile Entertainment's games to temporarily be completely free on the Xbox/Microsoft Store. That's a pretty big mistake to make when you're a business. That game was Wasteland Remastered, a classic RPG reborn back in 2020. But this debacle was even more troublesome because the version players snagged wasn't actually working.

Naturally, when this bug was discovered, inExile and Microsoft patched the hull and revoked the license, removing the game from the accounts of anyone who managed to grab it while it was mistakenly free.

Normally in these very abnormal circumstances, that would be the end of the story. It wasn't supposed to be free, so it's pulled from players' libraries. But the developer has actually made the decision to not only let players keep the game if they claimed it, but also to fix it.

Writing on social media, the developer said: "What people snagged before we fixed the glitch can’t actually be played. So, we’re giving them one that can. If you were lucky enough to redeem it, you’ll soon see the (non-working) game removed from your library, and you’ll have a new copy to claim waiting for you in your Offers & Credits. Hope you enjoy and see you in the Wasteland."

If you were lucky enough to bag Wasteland Remastered for free, then inExile is pointing you towards your account on the Xbox website, where you should be able to claim a new, working version. Happy days!

InExile is currently working on the very promising Clockwork Revolution, a time-bending RPG that looks like the perfect combination of Fallout and Bioshock. Earlier this year, studio head Brian Fargo explained that it's trying to "bring the level of reactivity from our isometric titles into something first-person." So, giving Wasteland Remastered and Wasteland 3 a spin in the meantime is a smart move, I'd say.
