Best-Selling Game About Shooting Fish Unveils First Major Update

Polygon RSS Feedโœ Ashely Claudinoโฑ 3 min read(about 4 hours ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Players have a reason to call their friends and boot up How to Fish once again, as a major content update has just dropped.

How to Fish is a silly indie game about killing fish in bizarre ways. It is short and funny, perfect for a Discord party night with friends. Even if you have already 100% completed it, it is time to return to How to Fish, as its first major content update is now available.

Multiplayer games with an unusual premise have greatly increased in popularity and have recently become a genre of their own โ€” friendslop. These games are usually affordable, fun, chaotic, and straightforward. These factors explain why they're so easy to get into. However, to prevent players from getting bored, friendslop games don't tend to last too long. So, while over a million gamers bought How to Fish within two days of its release, a large portion of these buyers probably finished it within the same time frame.

On Sept. 28, Dazed Games released The Islets update, v1.1.0, which is How to Fish's first content update. This adds a few hours to the game, as players will have to discover several isles, fish species, weapons, and more. Additionally, players can unlock new achievements as they explore The Islets content.

In The Islets update, players will have to visit small islands to collect crab carcasses and glass bottles, which can be exchanged for a new in-game currency by talking to an NPC located on an isle with a fort, who wears a green robe with a hood. They sell a new weapon: a bow with base damage of 250. The bow's draw distance can be upgraded by interacting with the quiver, while damage is improved through arrow upgrades.

This weapon might come in handy when taking out the new boss: the Manta. To challenge the Manta, players must locate the island with oil barrels. Chucking the barrel into the water will anger the creature and initiate the fight.

There are several new fish species with drip variants. Finding drip fish and putting them in the slot machine to get skins is one of the most exciting parts of the game. However, they are pretty rare. Thankfully, players can increase their chances of finding drip fish by going to an island that consists of various steep rocks, climbing to the top, and collecting the wishbone.

This is just the first of many updates, and it already has plenty of content to explore. Players can look forward to more How to Fish content in the future.

GTA 5 For Switch Mod Project Shuts Down, Dev Thanks Take-Two For Its โ€œMercyโ€๐ŸŽฎ Multi-platform

GTA 5 For Switch Mod Project Shuts Down, Dev Thanks Take-Two For Its โ€œMercyโ€

The creator of a mod project that sought to bring Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 to Switch is closing up shop, apparently at the request of rights owner Take-Two. This action comes in the same month that Rockstar published a new "Mod Guidelines" notice(https://www.rockstargames.com/community-resources/mod-guidelines) informing people they need to "respect our games" and are not allowed to modify its games to operate on consoles or devices that are not officially supported by Rockstar. GTA 5 was never released on Switch. Paralympics Productions announced(https://x.com/M0jso/status/2104610351358820703) (via GamesRadar(https://www.gamesradar.com/games/grand-theft-auto/gta-5-modder-behind-switch-1-port-using-rockstars-leaked-code-says-its-shutting-down-following-action-from-the-devs-i-am-thankful-for-take-twos-mercy/)) that it will shut down on October 3. The developer thanked people for their support and apologized for not being able to deliver GTA 5 for Switch. He also said he's "thankful for Take-Two's mercy," which makes it sound like this situation could have been worse for the modder. "This is the definitive end," the developer wrote. "Peace out, girl scouts." https://twitter.com/M0jso/status/2104610351358820703? The developer went on to say(https://x.com/M0jso/status/2104694190563086486) that they had received a cease-and-desist notice. He said he plans to comply with this because "I'm not an idiot." No legal action has taken place as of yet, he added. In other replies, the developer responded to people asking him to release his code so others could pick it up and take things from there. He said he won't do this(https://x.com/M0jso/status/2104640541933584500) because it would escalate the cease-and-desist into a formal lawsuit. He could, in theory, fight Take-Two in court, but the developer said he would most likely lose(https://x.com/M0jso/status/2104631868826255413). "They have solid grounds and with me being cocky, it shows real intent for 'mayhem," he said. "So I can't even appeal to a jury or something like I didn't know what I was getting into." The GTA 5 port for Switch from Paralympics Productions was due to be released "in the coming days,"(https://x.com/M0jso/status/2104626328549130381) the developer added. "I'm not releasing anything new and I'm not coming back. It's truly over. And no, no one will take over the project." GTA 5 never came to Switch, and GTA 6 is not expected to be released on Switch 2. However, it was previously reported that Rockstar was exploring the possibility of bringing GTA 6 to Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-for-switch-2-tests-reportedly-happening-but-dont-get-your-hopes-up/1100-6536305/).
