Overview & Key Takeaways

Defeating a resonant in Control Resonant will unlock more combat abilities. Here's where you can find them and which abilities you'll learn.

Resonants are the primary bosses in Control Resonant, and when you defeat one, you'll unlock another combat ability. Not every resonant is mandatory in order to finish the game. However, having only one or two abilities can make combat feel stale, so make sure to hunt them down to improve your fighting prowess.

Here's where you can find resonants in Control Resonant, and what combat abilities they'll unlock.

[Ed. note**:** This guide contains major spoilers for Control Resonant, so continue at your own risk!]

Update (Sept. 25): We've updated this guide with the location of every resonant and what combat abilities they unlock.

Resonant boss locations and combat abilities in Control Resonant

Resonants are scattered all over New York City in Control Resonant. As the only capable fighter around, it's your job to hunt them down. Luckily, you'll be rewarded with combat abilities, but you can only choose one of the options to add to your arsenal.

If you're not happy with your choice, you can head to the Gap by holding G on keyboard or down on the D-pad. Head over to the mural and use a reset item to refresh all of your combat abilities. Then, you're free to make your choices all over again.

Below, we've listed the resonants we've found so far, as well as the combat abilities you can learn from them.

Downtown โ€” The Artist

The Artist is the first resonant you'll find and ou cannot miss it โ€” it's in the tutorial. After you defeat them, you can choose from three combat abilities:

  • Barrage: Throw projectiles at a target, like Jesse Faden from Control.
  • Volatile Anomaly: Summon a floating orb that will throw projectiles at enemies. You can also throw the orb itself at enemies to deal more damage.
  • Shield: Put up a shield that will use your power meter to absorb damage. You can also dodge into enemies while the shield is active to deal damage.

Central โ€” The Deserter

The Deserter is found underground below the Patterned Factory in Central. Use power cores to open the factory's doors, and then take the elevator down. Once you clean the red masses off the pipes, you'll be free to take them on. Once you defeat them, you can choose between two combat abilities:

  • Ignite: Engulf your melee attacks, Barrage, Shield, and Volatile Anomaly in flames โ€” causing them to do fire damage. Hit enemies with enough fire damage, and you'll apply the burn status effect.
  • Inferno: Throw waves of fire at enemies โ€” dealing fire damage and causing burn in the process.

West Incursion Zone โ€” The Dancer

The Dancer is in the Theater Hall in the West Incursion Zone. You'll need to complete the fault in the Parking Garage to learn the Shift traversal ability before you head over. After you defeat them, you can choose between two combat abilities:

  • Push: Blast enemies away with a telekinetic shove. You can push enemies off ledges or into hazards for more damage.
  • Ground Slam: Slam into the ground while you're midair. This cannot be used on the ground, but it'll deal more damage if you use it higher up in the air.

The Park โ€” The Collective

The Collective is found behind the moldy gate at the bottom of the pit in the center of The Park. First, you'll need to eat all three molds scattered around the zone to unlock the gate. Then, head inside and use Reach and Shift to destroy the sprouting tentacles on the walls. Once defeated, you can choose between two combat abilities:

  • Spore Burst: Shoot mold projectiles out of your hands, which will build up the infected status effect. Infected enemies will take damage over time, and explode if hit with fire damage.
  • Growth: Summon a moldy turret that shoots spores at nearby enemies. The spores will also build up the infected status effect.

Underpass โ€” The Physicist

The Underpass Resonant is located at the top of the Spike. Use Shift to get onto the red carpeted wall, and follow the path up. Defeat the enemies ahead to unlock the path into the next area. Then, collect the three astral keys: one to the east, one to the north, and one to the south. Unlock all three doors, and then head into the arena to face off against the Physicist.

Once defeated, you can choose between two combat abilities:

  • Spike: Summon an Astral Spike, which is a chaotic black orb, to attack enemies. If used again, it can knock down a target. It also builds up the astralized status effect, which boosts the effectiveness and build-up speed of other status effects.
  • Astral Rebuke: Launch a homing spike towards an enemy that launches them into the air and applies lifted. It also builds up the astralized status effect.

The Co-director is the final resonant in Control Resonant, and they can be found in the Field Office in the Unknown. To get there, you need to use Pope's research balloons to unlock a path to the westernmost island. Then, on the southeastern island, you need to use Pope's research balloons again. Then again on the island with the Evac Building, until you get to the island with the Field Office.

Once you defeat them, you'll unlock Command, which allows you to make an enemy your ally. However, if they're a heavy enemy, they'll cost more command charges.

Unknown โ€” The Hedron

The Hedron is not included as a resonant for the achievements, but they're still the final boss of Control Resonant. You need to sever all the Hedron's ties in the Unknown, and play through the retro game sequence before you can get to them. After you complete both objectives, use the gravity well from the Oldest House, and ride it all the way to the Hedron.

Once defeated, you'll earn another combat ability point. You can equip any combat ability you'd like in your last slot.
