'Pokémon' Leak Teases A Totally New Frontier For The Series

From fighting games to MOBAs, the Pokémon series has experimented with nearly every type of video game genre. However, there's one specific genre that Pokémon has never officially attempted. It's a daunting genre that most gaming studios would never dare to try. Yet if recent rumors are true, Game Freak may soon defy expectations for the series — if not the wider gaming industry.

The rumor stems from an enormous leak suffered by series developer Game Freak back in 2025, also known as the terraleak. Though leaks are becoming increasingly common in the world of video games, for the Pokémon brand, the breach was unprecedented. The terraleak contained a trove of internal documents that outlined a decade's worth of Pokémon video games, not just a single game. This included specific information on Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves that, at the time, hadn't been formally revealed by Game Freak.

One of those concepts included a game with the code name Project Seed. According to a leaked pitch deck describing the game, Project Seed was a digital recreation of Japan that combined multiple regions in the Pokémon universe into a single game. The series has tackled multiple regions before — famously, 1999's Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver opened up to the wider Kanto region after players cleared the Johto region.

What is Pokémon Project Seed?

The idea as described by internal Game Freak documents would allow players to seamlessly explore a persistent, real-time world together. The experimental project would include a range of biomes that spawn Pokémon based on location, weather, season, and time of day. The game would also reportedly focus on social interaction, though specific details on this aspect of the game were sparse.

News of Project Seed leaked in late 2025, alongside the rest of the Pokémon terraleak. The concept has reentered the news cycle because Pokémon leaker Centro discussed the project on social media recently. According to Centro, Game Freak has steadily been readying its fandom for an MMO-like experience. The franchise has already incorporated areas where players can see one another in real time, and tougher co-op raid encounters. Mass Outbreaks, which mimic limited world events, have been included in some shape or form since the second generation of Pokémon games.

Other aspects of the rumor, like the emphasis on weather and location, are already evident in the mainline Pokémon games — including Winds and Waves. Nearly every modern Pokémon game has introduced regional variants. Yet some parts of the leak are dependent on other, as-of-yet unconfirmed Pokémon leaks. Per earlier reports, the tenth generation of Pokémon games will reportedly make evolutions more dynamic. Details like how a Pokémon is raised and the environment it is trained in are supposed to impact that monster's evolution. Pokémon that evolve this way are apparently called Seed Pokémon. If Seed Pokémon turn out to be real, a Game Freak project titled Project Seed that comes out after Winds and Waves makes perfect sense.

Would Pokémon truly attempt an MMO during a period when the gaming industry is shying away from live service games? Game Freak doesn't have a great track record for online connectivity in its games. Leakers also say that Project Seed may turn out to be a platform that other games build upon rather than its own distinct release.

Another potential wrinkle: All of these rumors are based on old documentation that may no longer be accurate. The chaotic nature of development makes it possible that all of these ideas were real at some point — yet they'll still never see the light of day. After the explosive success of Palworld, however, you have to imagine someone at Game Freak is mulling over how to push Pokémon into new territory. An MMO could be just the shake-up that the series needs.
