Marvel's Wolverine Update Tones Down Its Most Controversial Feature

Polygon RSS Feed✍ Tomas Franzese⏱ 2 min read(6 days ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

The latest update for PS5 exclusive Marvel's Wolverine just made its much-derided scent trails a little less garish

Compared to the typical big-budget, PlayStation-exclusive video game, the reception to Marvel's Wolverine has been much more muted. One of the biggest complaints is how much Marvel's Wolverine hand-holds players when directing them where to go next. To address that, Insomniac Games has toned down the opacity of scent trails in the game's first significant post-launch update.

What changed with the latest update for Marvel's Wolverine?

Late at night on Sept. 18, Insomniac Games released hotfix v1.001.005 for Marvel's Wolverine. A support page on Insomniac's website mentions that this update not only fixes some crash-causing issues, but also "adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense."

Players didn't take long to notice the update had rolled out. A post by X user and PlayStation influencer Radec highlighted how it changed. The scent trail used to be a bold, bright blue line, really clashing with the realistic environments of the game's already linear levels. Now, it looks cloudier and like less of a defined line, while still showing players where they need to go.

The patch notes for this hotfix also tease that the studio "continues to evaluate ways to further improve Sense in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update." This reaffirms that a way to remove scent trails from Marvel's Wolverine entirely is in the works. Previously, Insomniac director of communications and marketing James Stevenson alluded to this on X, writing, "We have been 100% listening over the last few days and the team has been cooking hard today in response to some of the feedback."

While Marvel's Wolverine didn't land as glowingly with critics and players as many other single-player PlayStation games, it's good to see Insomniac already addressing and working to fix some of the game's issues.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Will Have Four Performance Modes On PS5 Pro

!Final Fantasy VII Revelation April 8 2027 Release Date PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X/S Nintendo Switch 2 PC(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/23/50aa381f/05ffviirevelationscreenshot.jpg.webp) I got hands-on with Final Fantasy VII Revelation(https://gameinformer.com/product/final-fantasy-vii-revelation) at Tokyo Game Show last week, playing about 25 minutes of the game's first chapter. You can read more about my experience during that preview here(https://gameinformer.com/preview/2026/09/23/playing-chapter-1-gave-me-exactly-what-i-was-looking-for-after-a-disappointing), including what's happening narratively and my thoughts on the game's FITS system, but I also spoke with Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi about the PlayStation 5 Pro's graphics settings available in this build. Before hopping into the game, I paged through the visual settings and noticed "Quality," "Performance – Sharp," and "Performance – Soft." !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/23/d0f024a5/06ffviirevelationscreenshot.jpg.webp) It's clear Quality mode aims for the highest resolution and might run at a locked 30 FPS (though I couldn't confirm that during my preview). The Performance – Sharp and Performance – Soft return from post-launch Final Fantasy VII Rebirth support, giving players options for how they want to experience 60 FPS gameplay on PS5 Pro. Similar to Rebirth, Revelation's Performance – Smooth features a 60 FPS framerate with smoother, or softer, image quality, while Performance – Sharp features a 60 FPS framerate with sharper image quality. As for what that will look like in the final game, more testing beyond a 25-minute demo is needed, but the game was beautiful when I played it and ran at a consistent 60 FPS. Hamaguchi tells me players will see differences between these modes in things like hair, environmental detailing, shading, and more, however. On X during TGS, Hamaguchi posted(https://x.com/nhamaguc/status/2102083914638696592?s=20) that the PS5 Pro will leverage PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to deliver a mode that features both 4K image quality and 60 FPS gameplay, though he didn't say what it's called. Unfortunately, I can't recall seeing this option in the game's settings – blame it on TGS memory or perhaps it wasn't available in this preview build. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/23/e478f593/04ffviirevelationscreenshot.jpg.webp) I should note that, because this build was playable on PS5 Pro, there's no word on which of these modes, if any, will be available on base PS5, but if it's like Rebirth, all three, sans the PSSR mode, will be playable. Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027.

Marvel’s Wolverine Claws Are Real Now, And Your Groceries Don’t Stand A Chance🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platform

Marvel’s Wolverine Claws Are Real Now, And Your Groceries Don’t Stand A Chance

Contrary to comic book science, you don't need to enroll in a shadowy Canadian black-ops program and undergo excruciating pain to get a set of Wolverine's signature claws. Instead, it's much easier--and less traumatic--to simply hire some blacksmiths to craft you a set, which is exactly what PlayStation did to celebrate the launch of Marvel's Wolverine(https://www.gamespot.com/games/marvels-wolverine/). Choosing Fiedlero Knives for the job, PlayStation tasked the blacksmith with creating a custom set of Wolverine-inspired claws, and unsurprisingly, the end result looks downright lethal. https://twitter.com/PlayStation/status/2102782668060475678 They may not be made of indestructible adamantium, but these blades made short work of some fresh produce when tested. And best of all, you don't need a mutant healing factor(https://youtu.be/-vQ2RVqJCNM) to wield these--although it would be advisable, just in case you equip them and accidentally trip. Similar to the practical props used by Hugh Jackman, these claws are attached to a handle that makes the blades look like they're really coming out of your hands. Plenty of knock-offs are available online, including plastic versions that are slightly safer than the metal ones. Marvel's Wolverine launched earlier this month, but the reception has been lukewarm at best. The game has been criticized for its restrictive level design, excessive hand-holding, and repetitive combat, but developer Insomniac Games is aiming to address these complaints. A new patch for the game recently went live, toning down the intrusive scent trails and audio cues that lead to collectibles(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/all-marvels-wolverine-whiskey-bottle-locations/) within the various levels. "At best, it’s a fun but forgettable experience that’ll entertain you for a few hours. At worst, it shows that just because you can make really good superhero games with one character, that doesn’t mean you can make really good superhero games with any character," Tamoor Hussain wrote in GameSpot's Marvel's Wolverine review(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/wolverine-only-aims-as-high-as-its-stout-hero/). While that set of custom Wolverine claws aren't for sale, you can get your hands on a sixth-scale replica(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/hot-toys-marvels-wolverine-figure-gets-the-details-right-right-down-to-the-hairy-silicone-arms/) of the unstoppable mutant from Hot Toys. It comes with several sets of smaller claws to equip him with, as well as an impressive amount of accurate body hair on his beefy silicone arms.
