Critical Role Officially Gets a New Dungeon Master for Upcoming Video Game Crossover

Overview & Key Takeaways

Critical Role is raising the stakes with a new Dungeon Master and a warped Manhattan.

One of the best things about Critical Role is that, even with a weekly program, you never really know what surprises the multimedia company has in store. They've had Magic: The Gathering battles, a 24-hour Sam Riegel livestream, and even how-to guides for the latest Daggerheart expansion, Hope & Fear.

Now something new is on the way: a one-shot adventure that takes Daggerheart's mechanics and combines them with the setting of Remedy Entertainment's upcoming video game Control: Resonant.

The Altered World Event one-shot will feature as players Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, and Sean Durrie, who stars as Dylan Faden in Resonant. Helping the cast of Critical Role navigate this journey is the accomplished Zachery Renauldo, who Critters first met as the player character Barnaby in the Suikoden special in 2025, and again as Alphonse in the mini-campaign Age of Umbra: Sallowlands.

Renauldo began his career in the tabletop space as a YouTube and TikTok content creator, highlighting the humorous side of Dungeons & Dragons for a worldwide audience. Now, for the first time ever on Critical Role, Renauldo will lead the Altered World Event as Game Master.

Though we don't know much about what to expect from the one-shot, Critical Role revealed on X that the cast will explore a "warped Manhattan" on "the brink of paranatural annihilation." Given Control's strange, reality-bending story, we don't doubt the setting will fit perfectly with *Daggerheart'*s inventive uses of the Hope and Fear mechanics.

This isn't the first video game collaboration for Critical Role's own role-playing game. Matthew Mercer recently led Questwatch, a Daggerheart adventure that premiered during Blizzard Entertainment's BlizzCon on Sept. 13, which featured Mercer as his Overwatch character Cassidy, narrating the story for his fellow Overwatch voice actors.

The Altered World Event will air at 7 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Sept. 22, on Twitch, YouTube, and Beacon.
