Wolverine Updates Will Address Major Fan Blowback, Dev Confirms

Overview & Key Takeaways

Marvel's Wolverine developer Insomniac promises updates to the game following overwhelming negative player feedback

Sony is finally releasing Marvel's Wolverine today, but developer Insomniac Games is already hard at work fixing some of the game's biggest problems. This comes in response to the overwhelmingly negative critical response the game received before launch, which has seemingly already dashed any GOTY hopes and put an end to a long-running streak for Sony.

James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of communications and marketing, posted on X a few hours before Wolverine's official release to share the news. Stevenson wrote that the studio has "been 100% listening over the last few days and the team has been cooking hard today in response to some of the feedback." He finished the short post off by adding, "In case you were wondering what that smell out of our kitchen was." That last bit could hint that Insomniac plans on addressing the controversial scent trails that have become a major talking point about the game.

What's the deal with Wolverine's scent trails?

Throughout the story, Wolverine will see colorful scent trails that lead him to objects or designate the proper route through a given level. Wolverine was always advertised as a more traditional linear experience, as opposed to the open-world freedom of Insomniac's Spider-Man games. Still, many reviews felt that Insomniac’s systems made Wolverine play like a game with guardrails that constantly leads the player throughout the experience for fear that they might go off the intended path. The scent paths have become the lightning rod for all these complaints and fans (who haven't actually played the game until today) latched on to them in increasingly bad faith arguments.

Stevenson's assurance that Insomniac plans on rolling out more updates for Wolverine to improve the experience is good, but the updates may not actually be able to rectify the core flaws of the game. In our review, we said that the moment-to-moment combat may be serviceable but that it isn't enough because it is "completely at odds with the story Insomniac struggles to tell." Furthermore, "the entire emotional crux of the story falls apart because the action has to feel fun, fluid, and tantalizingly violent at all times. I never believe that Logan is holding something back, because I as a player never butt up against any friction that encourages me to hold back."

Marvel's Wolverine is available now exclusively on PlayStation 5.

PlayStation Plus Is Removing 7 Games Soon, So Play Them While You Can

A fresh batch of games are coming to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-plus-extra-premium-games-for-september-2026-include-wwe-2k26-and-more/) for Extra- and Premium-tier subscribers, but several games are also on their way out. While we don't have an exact date for their exit just yet, there'll be seven games in total leaving soon, so you only have a few weeks left to play one of the best survival-horrors of all time and a melodramatic gangland adventure where you can hit people really hard on the head with a baseball bat. PlayStation Plus Game Catalog games leaving soon !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/IMG8852.jpg?w=636) These games are leaving the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog soon. - Silent Hill 2 - Yakuza: Like a Dragon - Gloomhaven: Mercenaries Edition - Jurassic World Evolution 2 - Rogue Lords - Lake - Death Squared The biggest departure on the list is easily the Silent Hill 2 remake from Bloober Team, and it's leaving right before the start of spooky season. While the original Silent Hill 2 was long considered to be one of the greatest psychological-horror games of all time, the remake improved on it tremendously, offering more than just updated visuals and modernized gameplay. Dynamic combat is balanced by smarter enemy AI, while the titular Silent Hill is expanded with new locations and puzzles to create an explorable world full of suspense. Critically acclaimed upon its 2024 release, it's one of several new entries that have helped kickstart a Silent Hill renaissance(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/konami-wants-you-to-know-how-serious-it-is-about-silent-hill/). The next chapter in the series, Silent Hill Townfall(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/silent-hill-townfall-hands-on-preview/), launches on September 24, and this spin-off will see players explore a spooky Scottish town, using their handheld TV to stay a step ahead of the creatures haunting the local streets. Bloober Team is also working on a remake of the first Silent Hill game. Yakuza: Like a Dragon(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/yakuza-like-a-dragon-review-the-power-of-friendship/1900-6417603/) was a major departure from its predecessors. Not only did it feature a brand-new protagonist in the form of Ichiban Kasuga, but the gameplay also went from beat-'em-up brawling to turn-based RPG action. First arriving in late 2020, it's another great Yakuza game that combines a surprisingly heartfelt story with goofy moments and a likable cast of rogues. While the turn-based gameplay can be a grind--especially in the endgame--it's still worth checking out. Fans of the Yakuza franchise have eaten well since then, as we've gotten a sequel to Ichiban's first adventure, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, as well as several spin-off games and remakes. Don't forget, all PlayStation Plus subscribers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-plus-essential-free-games-for-september-2026/) can grab four freebies right now--Sniper Elite: Resistance, MLB The Show 26, Chained Echoes, and Wobbly Life. The PlayStation Plus Game Catalog is also adding Runescape: Dragonwilds and WWE 2K26 today, and it'll be updated with more games like Ball X Pit, Slitterhead, and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound over the next couple of weeks.

The Last Of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Canceled “On Behalf Of Sony,” Dev Says🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platform

The Last Of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Canceled “On Behalf Of Sony,” Dev Says

Naughty Dog's The Last of Us franchise featured a multiplayer mode in Factions, and while the studio planned to add multiplayer to the sequel, it abandoned those ambitions before release.(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-2-doesnt-have-multiplayer-separate/1100-6470130/) A modder spent months this year working on a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us 2, but its lead has now said it's not going to be released due to a request from Sony to shut it down. Modder @Speclizer(https://x.com/speclizer/status/2099250091206873093) said on social media that the mod was due to launch this month. However, they said they "recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hZQn81WA Speclizer said this is an "extremely sad" development, but they hope people who supported the project will stick with them for the next one. Their next project will be "something of my own" as opposed to an extension of an existing game. "Thank you all for the incredible amount of support over the last year. I hope to bring you something bigger and better soon!" Speclizer said. GameSpot has contacted Sony in an attempt to get more details. Naughty Dog was set to expand The Last of Us into an online multiplayer experience in a very big way with The Last of Us Online. The game was in development for years with significant resources dedicated to it, and it was reportedly almost ready for release(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/canceled-last-of-us-online-game-was-very-close-to-done-and-doing-really-well-internally-says-dev/1100-6539185/). However, in December 2023, Naughty Dog canceled the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-multiplayer-game-canceled-announces-naughty-dog/1100-6519973/), saying at the time that it was going to focus on single-player games instead. Also at that time, Naughty Dog confirmed that it had two single-player games in development. One has been revealed to be Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, while the other remains a mystery; many believe it's The Last of Us 3(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-3-release-date-trailer-story/1100-6531075/). In other Naughty Dog-related news, studio head Neil Druckmann has confirmed that the studio has no creative involvement in the upcoming third season of HBO's The Last of Us(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-season-3-did-not-include-naughty-dogs-involvement-for-creative-choices/). This is a big change, as Druckmann himself was personally and directly involved in the previous two seasons.
