Meet Gears of War's New Monster, the 'Flying Testicle' | Exclusive

Overview & Key Takeaways

Gears of War: E-Day will introduce a new enemy call the Spore Matron. Polygon has an exclusive image of the new Gears of War monster.

For a prequel, Gears of War: E-Day is going to tread a lot of new ground. One of the game’s innovations is a monster known as the “flying testicle,” for which Polygon is able to exclusively reveal a new image as part of our 2026 Fall Preview.

Of course, the monster isn’t literally called the “flying testicle.” That’s just how Gears of War brand director Nicole Fawcette described it during an interview conducted at Gamescom 2026. (Cue an Xbox rep face-palming in the corner.) Its real name is the Spore Matron.

Developed by The Coalition and out Oct. 6 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X, Gears of War: E-Day is the first mainline series entry since 2019’s Gears 5. In Gears lore, the original run of games picks up several years into the titular war, which sees humanity locked in existential conflict against the relentless Locust horde. Gears of War: E-Day explores the exact moment when the Locust emerges from the planet’s hollow core — quite literally Emergence Day, or as the game’s comically muscle-bound heroes call it, “E-Day.”

The Locust are a motley crew of bloody, barbaric nightmare creatures. According to Fawcette, the Spore Matron is inspired by the Gas Barge (those giant floating skull monstrosities) from Gears of War 2. But where the Gas Barge was all bone, the Spore Matron is all flesh: a bulbous, 10-foot-wide balloon who spews spores that fly after you, only stopping when you shoot them out of the sky. Was Fawcette’s initial description accurate? Well, you can decide for yourself:

The Spore Matron flies in front of a building in Gears of War E-Day Image: The Coalition/Xbox Game Studios

“It's so twisted and hilarious, [in a way] that only Gears could do. And when you see it and you fight it, it's just like, ‘What the fuck is that?’” Fawcette said. “It's just kind of perfect, because there is this mix of a very serious, heavy, dark subject — you know, sometimes there's very heavy themes — and then there's these over the top situations, characters, creatures: the sci-fi element.”

Beyond the new Spore Matron, some older enemies are getting reimagined in E-Day. Art director Aryan Hanbeck pointed out that the Boomer (longtime Gears fodder, really tall, wields heavy weaponry) is somehow even more jacked.

“He’s a bit of a reimagining of the Boomer that has been in the games the whole time. He's much bigger, he's nine feet tall, and he's just much girthier, and just kind of walks a little bit slower,” Hanbeck said. “He just looks like a tank.”

Speaking as someone who fought against a few Boomers for both Polygon’s Gears of War: E-Day campaign preview and Horde mode preview: confirmed.

Gears of War: E-Day is also evolving the Wretch, a Gollum-like creature you’d hear before you see. Fawcette noted how, in the original games, their infamous piercing screams would shatter nearby glass. But in E-Day, the screams actually have a “disorienting” effect on your character.

“They have an actual effect on the gameplay,” Fawcette said. “Which is, again, taking that idea of what we loved about the original game, and making your encounter with them so much more rich.”

From the few hours I’ve played, E-Day captures the Gears of War spirit — right down to the uniquely weighty shooting and cover systems — while pushing the series forward in new ways. It also colors in some narrative gaps that have persisted for years. The city setting of Kalona offers a never-seen-before look at a pre-apocalypse Gears of War world. The legendary chainsaw rifle gets its origin story. Protagonist Marcus Fenix reveals himself as a style icon on par with Leon S. Kennedy. And, yes, you fight some flying testicles.

“It's awesome,” Fawcette said. “There's lots of cool shit.”

Gears of War: E-Day will be released on Oct. 6 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

GTA 6 DualSense Controller Scalpers Are Already Cashing In

It feels like it's the 2021 PS5/Xbox Series X|S shortage all over again, as scalpers have once again begun targeting preorders for limited-edition consoles and accessories. After the 25th-anniversary Xbox Series X sold out(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-most-expensive-xbox-ever-sold-out-and-people-are-already-flipping-it-for-thousands/) within a minute and stock of the new Legend of Zelda-themed Switch 2 console was scooped up in record time, it looks like the next hot commodities are the GTA 6 DualSense controllers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-limited-edition-dualsense-controllers-are-on-the-way-and-they-look-fantastic/). These were recently unveiled, and while they aren't sold out yet, that hasn't stopped scalpers from heading to eBay to sell them at a drastically increased price. Currently, Sony has the two GTA 6 controller designs listed at an MSRP of $84 each. On eBay, listings have popped up for them, with prices averaging around $140 per sale(https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?nkw=GTA+6+DualSense+controller&sacat=0&from=R40&dmd=2&rt=nc&LHSold=1). Believe it or not, people are actually buying the controllers before they're out, as the white model is currently out of stock. Sony is still listing the black version for preorder(https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/buy-accessories/dualsense-wireless-controller-grand-theft-auto-vi-black-limited-edition-for-ps5-pc-mac-mobile) on its PlayStation Direct store, but it appears that the white limited-edition controller is the popular choice. What's also worth noting is that these eBay sales go against the site's terms of service, which specifically state that "presale listings must guarantee that the item will be shipped within 40 business days of purchase." !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/GTA-6-controllers.jpg?w=636) Yes, people are paying above MSRP for a GTA 6 DualSense controller! These controllers will start shipping out on November 19--the launch day for GTA 6--so each listing is well above the threshold of eBay's sales terms. Of course, that fine text doesn't mean much when eBay isn't even enforcing its own rules. While Sony has released several DualSense variants over the years, it looks like these new entries to the hardware line are benefiting from the hype and momentum of GTA 6 before it hits the scene in November. Each controller variant features an eye-catching design, ranging from a shimmering, color-shifting finish to palm tree details molded directly into the controller body. Sony hasn't announced a limited-edition GTA 6-themed PS5 yet, but it did launch two very cool versions of the console(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marvel-wolverine-has-given-us-sony-best-looking-ps5-ever/) inspired by its next exclusive game, Marvel's Wolverine(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/wolverine-only-aims-as-high-as-its-stout-hero/). In more GTA 6 news, you can check out how wanted levels work in the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-wanted-levels/), take a closer look at its (unofficial) launch times(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/unofficial-gta-6-worldwide-release-times-revealed-and-the-us-gets-it-almost-last/), and read up on why the next couple of months on the gaming calendar could be a bloodbath(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/falls-video-game-release-slate-is-intimidatingly-good-and-completely-doomed/).

PlayStation Dropping Physint Has Fans Trying To Figure Out What Went Wrong

A decade ago, at its PlayStation E3 press conference, Sony introduced veteran game designer Hideo Kojima in grand fashion to show off the first trailer for Death Stranding. It's now 2026, and that partnership appears to have fizzled out, as Kojima's Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor, Physint(https://www.gamespot.com/games/physint/), has found a new home at Xbox after Sony dropped it(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kojimas-physint-dropped-by-playstation-rescued-by-xbox/). The Metal Gear Solid creator has also confirmed that he received notice from the company that it intended to cancel Phsyint, leading to several months in which the project was shopped around before Microsoft stepped in to sign a publishing deal. It's yet another baffling decision made by Sony as it continues to set a new speedrunning record for jettisoning goodwill(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/profoundly-disappointed-is-this-companys-response-to-sonys-decision-to-end-disc-support/), and naturally, the Internet has a thing or two to say about its divorce from Kojima--including how his studio, Kojima Productions, is situated directly across the road from Sony. You can't make this stuff up! https://twitter.com/milktst/status/2097886264649490701 https://twitter.com/philiparola/status/2097938828204146875 https://twitter.com/ItsRyanHyett/status/2097944205138022833 https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:hkkn5gfv3zwfzzeeqj3rssfn/post/3mv54aqbwg223 https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:o5v2ehhranox5nubskub6424/post/3mv53vuhark23 https://twitter.com/FunSpeculation/status/2097886852174782611 https://twitter.com/slothsaretight3/status/2097881425408368750 https://twitter.com/realradec/status/2097906192198574122 https://twitter.com/TheVTran/status/2097902322257195516 https://twitter.com/MasterLeytrx/status/2097877698894770267 Physint is the second game from Kojima Productions to be made in partnership with Xbox--the first is his upcoming horror game OD--but don't expect to see it for a long time. While the game is a return to his Metal Gear roots(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kojima-explains-why-physint-is-his-return-to-mgs-like-action-espionage/1100-6531835/) with its focus on stealth and espionage, Kojima is also aiming for it blur the lines(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/hideo-kojimas-physint-is-still-in-conceptual-stage/1100-6533807/) between movies and video games. Back when the project was still being supported by Sony, Kojima mentioned that it was still several years away from being released(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/hideo-kojima-says-stealth-action-game-physint-isnt-coming-any-time-soon/1100-6531630/), and that timetable may have slipped further after the Sony drama.

Xbox Will Now Publish Hideo Kojima’s Action Espionage Game Physint After PlayStation Partnership Ends

!Physint Poster Revealed Cast PlayStation Exclusive(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2025/09/23/79659a8d/physintpromo.jpg.webp) Physint(https://gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2024/01/31/kojima-productions-is-working-on-a-new-action-espionage-game-with-sony), Kojima Productions’ upcoming stealth espionage game, will no longer be published by PlayStation. The console publisher has ended its collaboration on the game; meanwhile, Xbox, which is publishing Kojima’s upcoming horror game OD(https://gameinformer.com/the-game-awards-2023/2023/12/07/hideo-kojima-is-making-a-new-game-called-od-with-jordan-peele), has stepped in as Physint’s new publisher. Physint was first announced in January 2024 as Kojima Productions head Hideo Kojima’s return to action espionage. Kojima is, of course, the creator and primary creative mind of Konami’s Metal Gear series, one of the premier stealth action franchises. Little is known about Physint beyond the supporting cast(https://gameinformer.com/2025/09/23/kojima-productions-reveals-three-cast-members-poster-for-action-espionage-title-physint), which includes actors Charlee Fraser (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Anyone But You), Ma Dong-seok AKA Don Lee (Train to Busan, Eternals), and Minami Hamabe (Godzilla Minus One). Kojima has yet to reveal Physint's protagonist. A social media post(https://x.com/PlayStation/status/2097875212427735146) by PlayStation states that “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. "Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.” As PlayStation mentioned, the company has a long history of publishing Kojima's work. Most recently, it served as the publisher for Kojima Productions' two Death Stranding games, the most recent of which launched last year(https://gameinformer.com/review/death-stranding-2-on-the-beach/boundless-sincerity-aside-flaws). !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/10/4f18d641/physint-xbox-partnership.jpg.webp) Subsequently, Xbox released a statement(https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/09/09/xbox-and-kojima-productions-expand-partnership-to-publish-physint/?ocid=AnnouncesocomcxbotwPhotolrn9.9.5) announcing itself as Physint's new publisher. Its message reads: Hideo Kojima has spent his career challenging conventions and expanding what games can be. Today, Kojima Productions announced the next chapter of its partnership with Xbox. "Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox,” said Asha Sharma, Xbox CEO “This expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of Physint we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world,” said Hideo Kojima, game creator and founder of Kojima Productions. In addition to OD and Physint, this relationship will also extend beyond games, with Xbox and Kojima Productions collaborating across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences. We look forward to sharing more as development progresses. Hideo Kojima stated in May 2025 that Physint was likely 5-6 years away from release(https://gameinformer.com/2025/05/19/hideo-kojima-says-physint-his-next-action-espionage-game-is-5-6-years-away), positioning it as a next-generation title. With this move, the game will likely launch for Xbox’s upcoming console, Project Helix(https://gameinformer.com/2026/03/12/xbox-shares-new-hardware-details-for-next-generation-console-project-helix). Physint is slated to launch after OD(https://gameinformer.com/preview/2025/11/04/its-at-the-door), Kojima's upcoming horror game being developed in collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele and published by Xbox.
