PS5 Heist Shooter Fairgames Makes Surprising Return Under New Name

Polygon RSS Feedโœ Michael McWhertorโฑ 2 min read(about 2 hours ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Project Espresso looks to be the PlayStation 5 and PC multiplayer game Fairgames, which was announced in 2023.

Three years after its initial reveal, PlayStation and Haven Studios' heist shooter Fairgames (aka Fairgame$) has seemingly returned, according to a new playtest posted on Player.gg. The site will host a playtest for "an unannounced competitive action shooter" for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC under the codename Project Espresso, which bears a striking resemblance to Fairgames.

"Project Espresso is a third-person PvPvE competitive action game where competing teams race to infiltrate high-security locations, steal valuable cargo, and make it out before their rivals," reads the playtest's description on Player.gg. That sounds a lot like Fairgames, which a 2023 PlayStation Blog post described as "a thrilling competitive heist game where you join an underground movement to rob the ultra-rich and rebalance the scales."

The trailer for Project Espresso also shares several similarities with what we've seen of Fairgames, like the look of its gold vault and characters. (A character wears a white ski mask in both the Project Espresso and Fairgames trailers, for example.) You can sign up to join the playtest now with a Player.gg account.

Polygon has reached out to Sony Interactive Entertainment to confirm the identity of Project Espresso and will update this story when the company responds.

Fairgames (or Project Espresso, Break In, or whatever the game's final name is) will be the debut title from Haven Studios, which was founded in 2021 by former Assassin's Creed producer and Google Stadia Games and Entertainment head Jade Raymond. The Montreal-based developer was acquired by Sony in 2022, and revealed its long-in-development project in 2023 at PlayStation Showcase. Raymond has since left the studio.

"Fairgame$ will give you an opportunity to break the rules as a modern-day Robin Hood, a thrill seeker, or just someone who wants to collect cool loot," the game's creative director Mathieu Leduc said when the game was announced. He added, "Fairgame$ came from a desire to create a new type of PvP game with emergent sandbox gameplay."

Fairgames/Project Espresso is headed to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. It does not have a release date at this time.

Marvel's Wolverine Is One of Sony's Worst-Reviewed PS5 Exclusives

Marvel's Wolverine is a rare critical misfire for Sony and developer Insomniac Games. Critics bashed the PS5 game's linear gameplay and narrative.

Wolverine on the PS5 goes back to a simpler (and bloodier) style of action game

Marvel's Wolverine captures just how angry its lead character is. The latest PS5 exclusive from Spider-Man developer Insomniac, Wolverine is a straightforward action game that is at its best when you're (literally) slicing through enemies or thrust into a sequence pulled from a blockbuster movie, like climbing the fuselage of a plane as it careens &8230;

Unofficial GTA 6 Worldwide Release Times Revealed, And The US Gets It Almost Last

GTA 6 is one of the most-anticipated games ever, and it arrives on November 19. People naturally want to know when exactly that day it will be available to play, and now it looks the like first indication of that has come to light. GTA Vice(https://www.gtavice.net/news/gta-6-playstation-worldwide-release-countdown) scoured PlayStation Store listings for the game across 63 countries and regions, and discovered that the game will not have a global simultaneous release. It looks like the US will be among the last major markets to get it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpPpqZwUwl0 Again, this is all based on PlayStation Store listings and is not confirmed by Rockstar. GameSpot has followed up with the developer seeking comment. According to GTA Vice, GTA 6 will unlock--on the PlayStation Store, at least--at midnight local time. That means people in New Zealand and Australia will get in first and the US will be among the final major regions to get started. In short, GTA 6 will become available to play in New Zealand at midnight in the country, which works out to 5 AM PT / 8 AM ET on November 18. People in the US will then have to wait 16 hours to play GTA 6 where they live. If this is accurate, then people in the US will be in for a tough day as they see the game go live for other people and have to wait. If you're concerned about spoilers, that's another reason to be on guard that day. It is also worth mentioning again that this information may not be accurate, or that details could change, so people should wait to hear directly from Rockstar about launch times. While GTA 6 unlocks on November 19, preloading for what we're expecting to be a very big game begins on November 12. That is also when the game's physical edition--which includes a code in a box--will be able to buy in stores, though it does not unlock until November 19. According to SensorTower(https://sensortower.com/grand-theft-auto-VI/sales-tracker), GTA 6 has already sold more than 5 million copies via preorders, and that number could climb to 25 million by launch(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-preorders-alone-could-pay-for-production-budget-expert/). That would work out to more than $2 billion in revenue(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-preorders-alone-could-pay-for-production-budget-expert/), which is reportedly enough to pay for the game's development budget.
