Professor Layton’s Nintendo Debut Is Getting a Remake in 2027

Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of Level-5's beloved Professor Layton series. To celebrate, the company has announced it is remaking Professor Layton and the Curious Village.

Level-5 announced the remake with a teaser trailer on its YouTube channel. Professor Layton and the Curious Village was first released in 2007 on the Nintendo DS handheld, with a global release bringing the game to a wider audience the following year. It debuted the series' signature puzzle-solving mechanics while introducing players to the titular hero and his apprentice, Luke Triton. It was met with widespread acclaim upon its release and launched a series that is still going strong nearly 20 years later.

The game sees Layton and Luke exploring the village of St. Mystere in search of the Golden Apple. A recently deceased baron declares that whoever finds the mysterious artifact will inherit his fortune, and the residents help the leading duo along while also engaging them in a series of puzzles.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village platforms and release date

Beyond the 2027 release window, Level-5 hasn't shared a specific release date. For what it's worth, the original game released on Feb. 15, 2007, so perhaps we could be looking at a February launch. The remake has been confirmed for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC.

The remake looks to be in the same style as the upcoming Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. The teaser site highlights the remake's new 3D rendering and high-resolution. While not confirmed, it is possible Professor Layton and the Curious Village will include the use of generative AI in some way, as Level-5 has gone on record in defense of technology in game development. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is the first original title in the series since 2013.
