New Professor Layton Game Finally Gets a Release Date After Years of Delays

On Wednesday, Level-5's puzzle-adventure game Professor Layton and the New World of Steam received a 2026 release date following a full-year delay. Over the years, due to a lack of new information on the latest Professor Layton game, fans began to lose hope and expected the date to be pushed back yet again. In April, a new trailer confirmed that the 2026 release schedule remained unchanged. Now, months later, the game's official release date was at last announced during September's Nintendo Direct.

Here's the game's official description, per an announcement from Nintendo:

Professor Layton and his trusted assistant Luke return in an all-new installment of the puzzle-solving adventure series set at the dawn of the industrial age. After receiving a letter from Luke, the professor travels to Steam Bison, a rapidly developing American town plagued by mysterious incidents.

Professor Layton officialy returns after 13 years

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is the first new mainline entry in the series since 2013's Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, the final chapter in the Layton prequel trilogy. Between that game — released for Nintendo 3DS — and New World of Steam, publisher Level-5 has released a series of spinoffs and crossovers: Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy. Soon, the professor will enter his sequel era with New World of Steam.

Level-5 announced Professor Layton and the New World of Steam back in 2023. At the time of its reveal, the game was expected to arrive sometime in 2024.

Even though it is much closer to the end of the year than fans would've initially thought, the upcoming Professor Layton game will in fact come out in 2026. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is scheduled to launch on Thursday, Dec. 10. And though the release date announcement was made during a Nintendo Direct, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will also be available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC via Steam.
