Now You Can Play Star Fox Adventures On Switch 2 And Decide If It’s Terrible Or Great Yourself

Overview & Key Takeaways

The black sheep of the Star Fox series, Star Fox Adventures, has landed on the Nintendo Switch Online service. As announced in the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, the GameCube title is available to play as a Nintendo Classic today for subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Star Fox Adventures came out in 2002 and marked a departure from the dog-fighting gameplay the series is known for. Developed by Rare, the game began life as Dinosaur Planet for Nintendo 64 before Shigeru Miyamoto proposed converting it into a Star Fox game.

Featuring Zelda-like action-adventure gameplay, Adventures has Fox McCloud stepping out of the Arwing and exploring Dinosaur Planet on foot, fighting enemies with a staff and solving environmental puzzles. Adventures also introduced the blue fox character Krystal, who later becomes the first female pilot in Star Fox.

Star Fox Adventures is a particularly divisive entry in the franchise, straying from the flight-combat-simulator roots of the original games and delving into Zelda-like territory. It's also famously Rare's last game for Nintendo before the studio was acquired by Microsoft.

Some fans might argue that Adventures was when the franchise started to go awry, with its follow-ups Assault and Command receiving lukewarm receptions, and the eventual attempted Star Fox Zero is generally looked down on by fans and critics alike. The series did win back goodwill from fans with this year's remake of Star Fox 64 on Switch 2.

Other than the shadowdrop of Star Fox Adventures, the Direct also revealed that a free update is coming to the new Star Fox game, adding new multiplayer features and maps. The Star Fox update launches on September 29.

With No 3D Mario In Sight, Mario’s 40th Is A Bust For Switch 2 Owners

Another Nintendo Direct came and went without mention of a new Mario game, ending the franchise's 40th anniversary year not with a bang, but with a resounding "huh?" Despite rumors and murmurs from noted leakers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/rumored-3d-mario-game-could-finally-be-revealed-at-tomorrows-nintendo-direct/), there was no reveal of a 3D Mario game at the September 2026 Nintendo Direct(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-direct-september-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-and-games/). In fact, the only mention of Nintendo's mascot was a free update to Mario Kart World, which allows you to play SNES courses already in the Free Roam map in Versus mode. Traditionally, Nintendo consoles have been blessed with a 3D Mario not long after they hit stores. Super Mario 64 was a launch title for the Nintendo 64, and Sunshine, Galaxy, 3D Land, and Odyssey all released within a year of their respective platforms' lifecycles. (Wii U title Super Mario 3D World launched a year and four days after the console, but that's close enough.) https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/2097696070990016647?s=20 Meanwhile, there hasn't even been a hint of a 3D Mario game for Switch 2. At the very least, Mario fans have been able to enjoy Donkey Kong Bananza, which was developed by the same team that made Super Mario Odyssey--and it certainly has a lot of Odyssey's DNA. Still, the lack of a mainline Mario game puts a damper on a monumental anniversary year(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mario-is-missing-why-does-marios-40th-birthday-feel-so-fart-sound/) for the jump-happy plumber. Yes, Mario hit it big at the box office with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but all Switch 2 owners have gotten are ports and a tennis game. And while Nintendo counted the adorable Yoshi and the Mysterious Book as part of the celebration, that game is notably Mario-less. Zelda fans are at least getting a full remake of the beloved Ocarina of Time for that franchise's 40th, and a brand-new 3D Kirby game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kirby-and-the-world-beyond-announced-fully-leans-into-kirby-as-elder-god/) marks the pink puffball's 35th birthday. Even Metroid fans are eating well(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/samus-is-returning-to-2d-in-metroid-ravenous-and-she-talks-again/) now. Mario will surely have his due soon, and video game development is a notoriously long and difficult process. But Nintendo seemed ill-prepared for Mario's 40th birthday, and the fact that a successor to Super Mario Odyssey might not come until a decade after that game's release is a disappointment tantamount to finding that the princess is in another castle.
