Witcher 4 Dev “Not Worried” About Future Of Consoles Despite Rising Costs

Overview & Key Takeaways

CD Projekt joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski is "not worried" about the future of consoles, despite rising costs that could impact growth in the sector.

Speaking to The Game Business, Nowakowski said consoles continue to be "necessary to broaden the audience" for casual and semi-casual players. "It’s important to have easy to plug in and enjoy gaming," he said.

He said consoles will "weather the storm" they are currently facing today, including pricing. Nowakowski also said he's heard the rumors that the PS6 and next Xbox could be delayed, but he said, "I don't know if they're true."

Generally speaking, Nowakowski said CD Projekt doesn't spend too much time worrying about how the company reaches people. "Content is the king. And if the content is right, people will find a way to play it," the executive said.

The developers at CD Projekt would ask for "as much power" as possible to help display games in the best possible light. However, Nowakowski said the developers at CD Projekt are "realistic," too, so if next-gen consoles get delayed, some ideas that would require new, more powerful hardware might get "put on a shelf for the future."

"We’d have to adjust. We’re not worried on the commercial side. Consoles are here to stay," he said.

CD Projekt has multiple games in the works that are likely planned for new consoles, as The Witcher 4 is lined up for release in 2028, with Cyberpunk 2 likely coming sometime after.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have raised hardware prices due to global market factors, including tariffs and the AI-fueled demand for components and memory. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently said it's "wonderful" that GPUs have use cases outside of gaming, even if it means that Xbox consoles are now more expensive than ever. Nintendo, for its part, has received refunds for President Trump's tariffs--which were deemed illegal--but said it has no legal requirement to pass along any money to consumers who paid more. Sony, meanwhile, has received gigantic tariff refunds as well, with no plans to pass anything along.

There are rumors that the next wave of new consoles could cost $1,000 or more, and that could have a dramatic, negative effect on the market overall.

Xbox’s New TCL Partnership Couldn’t Come At A Worse Time

Xbox has announced a new partnership with TCL, which will see the Xbox app added to "select" models from the brand. This means that owners of those TCL TVs won't need to spend $500 on an Xbox Series S or $800 on an Xbox Series X, as they can instead take advantage of the cloud-based gaming features offered as part of a monthly Xbox Game Pass subscription--but only for a few hours per month(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/game-pass-is-getting-worse-and-more-expensive/), before they need to start coughing up some extra cash to buy more hours to play. If your TCL TV is supported, all you'll need is a Game Pass subscription and an Xbox controller to start playing. Xbox Game Pass also offers a library of games to play, so you'll be good to go once you're signed up and logged in. As a reminder, you'll only get a few hours of cloud streaming depending on which tier of Game Pass you sign up for. The cheapest option, Game Pass Essential, will give you five hours of cloud streaming; Game Pass Premium doubles that number to 10 hours, and Game Pass Ultimate caps out at 15 hours. Pricing for top-up cloud streaming packages has not yet been announced. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN1JlrG2esw This announcement also comes during a busy time for Xbox, as its next big first-party game is Gears of War: E-Day. It arrives after a busy year for the gaming brand, which saw 75 day-one releases(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-kept-at-least-one-big-promise-in-its-most-tumultuous-year-ever/) through its subscription program. More Game Pass titles are also on the way in Septembe(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-in-september-expands-with-seven-new-games/)r, with Speedrunners 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War headlining the first wave of new arrivals. TCL TVs are typically positioned as budget-to-mid-range sets, which could potentially give Xbox exposure to millions of consumers who wouldn't normally buy one of their expensive consoles. The Azure servers that Xbox uses for streaming games belong to its parent company, Microsoft, and these have started to turn a tidy profit for the company. Microsoft recently reported(https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/microsoft-reveal-azure-cloud-sales-financial-reporting-shift-2026-09-02/) $29.4 billion in Azure server sales for the last quarter, but Amazon Web Services still eclipses those numbers with $42.2 billion in quarterly revenue.
