FromSoftware is hoping to make a splash on the Switch 2 later this year when it launches The Duskbloods, a gothic competitive multiplayer game that’s unlike anything the studio has made before. But before that, Switch 2 owners have a chance to experience the studio’s biggest hit for the first time thanks to a port of Elden Ring and its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. For the most part, the new version — called the “Tarnished Edition” — is the same game that captivated players in 2022. But the shift in platform also makes it a particularly compelling way to explore the Lands Between.

Elden Ring differentiated itself from past FromSoft games by introducing a large open world shrouded in mystery and brimming with danger. And as we’ve learned over the years, open-world games work especially well on Nintendo’s hybrid console, letting you play in small bursts while in portable mode before settling in for grander adventures on your television. Nintendo made this point crystal clear launching the original Switch alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the extra horsepower of the Switch 2 has been put to use for ports of gigantic games like Cyberpunk 2077.

In many ways Elden Ring is an ideal test case for the Switch 2. It may be a few years old, but it’s a big and demanding game, one where every element matters. Wonky frame rates could mean death in battle, while dark or fuzzy graphics could allow a cave-dwelling creature to get the jump on you. I spent dozens of hours exploring and dying in the PS5 version of the game when it first launched, and I’ve since spent around 10 hours dabbling with the Switch 2 port. And while the Switch 2 edition isn’t the most technically impressive version of the game, it is one that runs just well enough to possibly be my favorite way to play.

Replaying the opening hours of Elden Ring is an interesting experience. It’s easy to forget just how unforgiving the game can be early on. You play as a weak little wretch known as a Tarnished, thrust into an expansive fantasy realm full of things that want to kill you. One of the first things you see is a giant gladiator riding a horse, and if you try to attack it you’ll die from a single swipe of its sword. It’s a powerful learning experience, and much of my time with the Switch 2 version of the game has been spent cowering in bushes and slaying flocks of giant bats in order to slowly level up my fledgling astrologer. I’ve made some progress — I finally took down Margit, the Fell Omen, the game’s first major boss, and I made it to the Roundtable to get a comforting hug from Fia — but mostly I’ve just been puttering around, cautiously poking at the edges of the world, slowly growing in both strength and confidence.

The most important thing about my experience so far is that the limitations of the hardware never had a negative impact. There are some Switch 2 drawbacks, like less detailed characters and some textures that look muddy or washed out. But these are all superficial things, and I found myself largely forgetting about them the more that I explored. I haven’t come across any issues of stuttering or frame rate drops, either in portable or TV mode. Which is all to say that Elden Ring performs well enough on the Switch 2 that, aside from the occasional long load, I haven’t spent much time thinking about the game’s performance at all.

Instead, I’ve found myself once again lost in the Lands Between, spending many of my waking moments reliving adventures or dreaming up where I want to go next. As with other big games on the Switch or its successor, the nature of the platform makes it easier to fit an adventure of this scale into my life. Sometimes, I grab the tablet and just spend 20 minutes clearing out a camp full of soldiers or seeking out the next Site of Grace, making incremental progress that will make life easier when I tuck in to explore for hours in TV mode.

This isn’t a new revelation about the Switch by any stretch. But with Elden Ring’s sprawling landscape and unforgiving combat, it’s an ideal example of the type for how well this kind of open world can work on the Switch 2. And with The Duskbloods lurking in the shadows, it’s a great way to scratch that FromSoft itch while waiting for the studio’s next game.

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 28th.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Extended Gameplay Look Highlights Wutai, Highwind Exploration, Queen's Blood, Side Quests, And More

!Final Fantasy VII Revelation April 8 2027 Release Date PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X/S Nintendo Switch 2 PC(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/d8c25029/ff701.jpg.webp) Square Enix has released another trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation(https://gameinformer.com/product/final-fantasy-vii-revelation), this time a whopping 10-minute look at the game's characters, story, setting, and so much more. Plus, the trailer also revealed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. The trailer begins by highlighting each playable party member alongside new looks at the game's expanded combat, then breaks to reveal the April 8 release date. After that, director Naoki Hamaguchi(https://gameinformer.com/sgf-2026/2026/06/12/we-asked-final-fantasy-vii-revelation-director-naoki-hamaguchi-whats-next-for) appeared on camera to introduce the rest of the trailer, and we learn more about how Cloud and Co. will jump from the Highwind airship and parachute down to the planet below, Fortnite-style. Once on the ground, you can hop onto your trusty chocobo and sprint/glide/fly around as far as the eye can see. Plus, this chocobo can be an active participant in combat now, and of course, you can also just hop off and fight with your character's weapons, too. Check out the release date trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation below: For the uninitiated, the FITS (Function-Integrated Tactical Suitware) system is the new addition to Revelation's combat, and it's basically this game's Job system, allowing different party members to slot into various classes like warrior, black mage, and more. You can access your party's FITS on the Highwind, which is your base of operations in Revelation. To head to a new location, pilot the Highwind there in real time, and when you're ready to jump, hop on out and parachute down to the ground below. You'll be bringing the Highwind to returning locations like Junon and new ones, too, like Wutai, Yuffie's ninja-centric homeland. This trailer offered a great look at Wutai, which looks like a fantastical take on feudal Japan, and Yuffie's grapple gun makes traversing its towering buildings a breeze. In addition to Wutai, Revelation features several new areas, such as Rocket Town, though the trailer stops short of showing it. However, the trailer does bring us back to Gongaga, which first appeared in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Here, Square Enix explains that side quests in locations like Gongaga will reveal more about what's happening in the world, including the whereabouts of other characters from the wider Final Fantasy VII universe of games and media. Strangely, Revelation lets you to speed up cutscenes by 2x, allowing you to blitz through narrative moments (though I'm not sure why you would do that outside of, potentially, repeated playthroughs). It turns out, side quests and the unfolding narratives associated with them will change based on who you are controlling in the party. Cissnei reacts differently when working with Vincent, for example, versus Yuffie, but Square Enix says players can discover that in April. One of the best parts of Rebirth, the optional but incredible Queen's Blood card game, returns in Revelation. This time, Red XIII is the protagonist of this Queen's Blood saga, and during his adventure, he'll encounter powerful opponents that turn standard bouts on their heads. To close out the trailer, Hamaguchi asks that players get through Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth ahead of Revelation's launch in April. Final Fantasy VII Revelation hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 Is Out This October With A Very Special Guest

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/warhammer-40000-boltgun-2-announced-very-unexpected-spin-off-out-now/1100-6531732/) is one of the most highly anticipated games in the entire Warhammer franchise, and we'll be able to play it very soon. Even better, it's going to feature a guest appearance by one of the most legendary composers in the history of first-person shooters. On October 14, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 will release across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Switch 2 release to follow "shortly after" the other versions, according to the official announcement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRCcxzt-j8A If you like the tune blasting in the game's release-date trailer, there's a good reason for that: Mick Gordon(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/after-a-decade-of-waiting-mick-gordon-is-finally-performing-doom-live/) of Doom and Wolfenstein fame is responsible. His composition is described as a "cameo" appearance and will play during the final boss fight. If that doesn't get you pumped to slay the enemies of the Emperor, nothing will. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 expands on the first game's boomer-shooter action, letting you play as either Ultramarine Malum Caedo like in the first game or as Battle Sister Nyra Veyrath. You'll be going up against the daemonic demigod Vashtorr as well as countless other enemies, and if it's anything like the first game, you can expect to be turning lots of them into tiny pieces of bloody flesh. The first game was also brutally difficult, and we expect the sequel to follow suit.
