Halo remake isn't doing so hot on PS5 compared to Black Ops ports

Polygon RSS FeedElijah Gonzalez2 min read(about 1 month ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 recently came to the PS4 and PS5, where they're dramatically outselling Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Strange things are happening in the world of video game sales figures. After decades of Xbox exclusivity, Halo finally made the jump to PlayStation with the Halo: Combat Evolved remake, Halo: Campaign Evolved. But despite being a crossover that would have had gamers in 2007 foaming at the mouth, it seems modern PlayStation 5 players didn’t care very much.

According to data from Alinea Analytics, Campaign Evolved only sold around 351,000 copies on PlayStation in July. It was outpaced by Palworld, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto 5, several EA Sports games, and Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Rescynced. Halo: Campaign Evolved sold around 212,000 on Steam and around 900,000 on Xbox (console and PC), based on Alinea Analytics' figures. Considering Halo 3 sold 14.5 million on a single console, those PS5 numbers do not seem great. Campaign Evolved has received good reviews for its updates and new additions, particularly its all-new missions, but this doesn’t seem to have resulted in enthusiasm among PlayStation fans. The lack of PvP is probably at least part of the problem.

While Microsoft was likely hoping for a bigger haul from its legacy series finally landing on a rival console, a lower-risk bet paid off instead. Microsoft and Activision-Blizzard recently released Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The games are exceeding expectations and have sold a combined 11 million copies at $39.99 each (or $19.99 for PlayStation Plus subscribers) for an estimated $435 million, based on Alinea's data.

Iron Galaxy handled the ports of the 2010 and 2012 Call of Duty games, which, despite featuring no updates or changes from the original versions, have sold 3 million and 8.2 million, respectively. The first two Black Ops games were previously only available on the PS3 for PlayStation consoles. The Xbox 360 version is backward compatible with modern Xbox hardware.

The overwhelming response to these seemingly minimal-effort ports shows the continued demand for Call of Duty's multiplayer offerings, while the tepid response to the Halo remake signals the series’ waning appeal following Bungie's breakup with Microsoft after Halo: Reach. It turns out a silent majority of players continue to obsess over multiplayer shooters and sports games while ignoring almost everything else, even the Master Chief.

Double Fine Flexes Its Independence With Price Cuts And A New PS5 Release

After its liberation from Microsoft's ownership(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-layoffs-studio-closures-and-spin-offs-everything-announced-today/), the newly independent Double Fine Productions has been quite busy. At the September 2026 State of Play(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-state-of-play-september-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-games-and-trailers/), PlayStation revealed that Double Fine's surreal adventure Keeper is shadow-dropping on PS5, and the studio added that the acclaimed game is getting some intriguing updates. Along with the surprise PS5 release, Keeper is also getting a "Psychedelic Mode," which is probably exactly what it sounds like. Considering how much bizarre imagery is already in the game, an even more "wild new way" to play the game should be a treat. And Double Fine wants to sweeten the deal with a price cut, which the studio implemented with its other recent title, Kiln. https://bsky.app/profile/doublefine.com/post/3mummzhp4ws2f Keeper launched in 2025 at a $30 price point and now sells for $20. Kiln, which released earlier in 2026, cost $20 for the base game, with a $30 deluxe "Fired Up" edition; those are now $8 and $10(https://bsky.app/profile/doublefine.com/post/3muklpwthnc2a), respectively. Unlike Keeper, Kiln launched on PS5 along with Xbox and Steam. Meanwhile, Double Fine revived its Amnesia Fortnight game jam and already exceeded its crowdfunding goal of $400,000(https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/amnesia-fortnight-2026-indie-reboot) for the project. The game jam, a tradition for Double Fine since 2007 (and was halted while it was under Xbox's ownership), will result in the studio's next title. But the loftiest stretch goal in the crowdfunding campaign is the promise of a Brutal Legend 2 should it reach $100 million(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/i-am-begging-one-cool-billionaire-to-take-up-double-fines-offer-to-fund-brutal-legend-2/). It's a huge ask, and one that likely won't be met pending intervention from any moguls who are big Jack Black fans. Keeper was beloved by critics, with GameSpot's Keeper review(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/keeper-review-this-ones-a-keeper/1900-6418424/) calling it a "visual feast." Since Double Fine's spin-off from Xbox, purchases of its games will directly support the studio(https://www.doublefine.com/news/and-were-back). The split from Microsoft occurred in July, but the studio unfortunately cut 25% of its staff(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/double-fine-cuts-25-of-staff-after-separating-from-microsoft/) as a result.
