Koei Tecmo is putting out an “AI chat RPG” based on the Atelier Ryza series, and it sounds bleak

Overview & Key Takeaways

Koei Tecmo has partnered with a generative AI startup to create an AI chat RPG that lets you talk with Ryza from the Atelier Ryza series.

SpiralAI and Koei Tecmo’s studio Gust just announced RyzaChat: Your Midsummer Dream Story with AI Ryza, an “AI chat RPG” set in the Atelier Ryza universe. It seems like a bit of a nightmare. According to Automaton, the iOS and Android game is entirely built aroundhaving conversations with an AI chatbot version of series protagonist Ryza.

The game begins with the player sending messages that help Ryza construct a boat to leave Kurken Island, which then unlocks a world map. From here, they are given AI-generated quests that they can complete through conversations. The game apparently features “exploration, material gathering, combat, synthesis, and construction alongside the full cast of characters from the original Atelier Ryza trilogy.” There is also a Chat Mode that allows players to talk with Ryza directly, and she can make different facial expressions and gestures in response to conversations.

Koei Tecmo recently announced that it was partnering with SpiralAI, a Japanese tech startup behind the large language model (LLM) Geppetto2. The LLM was revealed as a way to “safely deliver Japanese IP to the world.” As for RyzaChat, SpiralAI has said that the game was designed with measures to ensure the “responsible use of AI.” The company promised that it won't include AI-generated video or images in the game, and that all illustrations, character portraits, promotional videos, and key visuals were created by human artists. The voice synthesis was created from recordings made by Ryza’s voice actress, Yuri Nohuchi, and the dialogue was trained on the Atelier Ryza series' script and reference materials. SpiralAI promised that the revenue from the game will be shared with contributors, like the illustrators, voice actors, and IP holders, in the form of royalties.

However, while these guarantees address some of the moral compunctions related to AI, they don’t assuage all of them. For one, there have been several concerning reports of individuals becoming obsessed with AI-generated romantic partners, spending hours a day communicating with chatbots and becoming emotionally dependent on them. Considering that these games already sexualize Ryza quite a bit, seemingly as a marketing stunt (many fans refer to the series as "Atelier Thighza"), it's fair to fear that some may fall down a rabbit hole with RyzaChat.

And beyond ethical issues around this controversial technology, the fact remains that most AI-chat-focused games simply aren’t very good. They inherently lack the direction and guidance of a human storyteller, regurgitating reference materials instead of crafting a purposeful story. Other game companies, like Ubisoft, have experimented with similar technology with lackluster results.

Epic Games’ New Voice Chat Lets You Keep Talking To Friends While Playing Different Games

Epic Games has announced that it's going to make it easier than ever to hang out and talk with friends across different platforms by launching Epic Parties. This voice chat service will work across Fortnite (on all supported platforms), the Epic Games Store launcher (PC, iOS, and Android), and the Epic Games app (iOS and Android). For example, you can start a voice party from your phone or PC launcher, ring up a friend who is busy playing Fortnite on their PlayStation, and even transfer that call from your phone to your PC when you get back to your desk. This means that you can sit in on a voice call through the Epic PC Launcher while playing completely different games from your Epic library. Other benefits include a seamless approach to grouping friends together, as Epic says that if you're in a voice party with friends and everyone decides to open Fortnite, then the game will automatically drop you all into the same lobby together. This new feature is competing directly with Discord, which has been the go-to third-party app for users for several years. Epic's built-in alternative aims to let users bring their social list, voice channels, and digital avatar with them across multiple platforms and from game to game, whether you are on iOS, Android, PC, or console. Epic has also hinted that these voice and avatar systems will be integrated directly into Unreal Engine 6, and the tools will be offered to other developers in time. For now, it's currently rolling out to Fortnite, and Epic Parties will be available in Rocket League next year. According to Epic's year-in-review stats(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/people-spent-more-but-played-less-on-the-epic-games-store-in-2025/2900-7449/), over $1 billion was spent in the store in 2025, and it reached an all-time record of 78 million monthly active users on PC. Earlier this year, Epic spoke more about its plans to further improve its digital storefront(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/epic-explains-its-blend-of-blockbusters-and-smaller-games-for-weekly-freebies/1100-6538882/). "Our goal is to keep building a storefront and launcher that players want to engage with and use to grow their game library, but we need to be able to connect players with the game they want to play at the time they want to play it," Kyle Billings, director of strategy and business operations at the Epic Games Store, said to GameSpot.

Final Fantasy Resonance Is Getting A Demo And A Sephiroth

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/12367d3d/resonance02.jpg.webp) If you want to give Final Fantasy Resonance a shot before release, you're in luck. Sony and Square Enix announced during a State of Play that a demo for the game is available today ahead of its October 22 release. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC. It was also revealed that Sephiroth will make an appearance in the game. Final Fantasy Resonance is a heavily overhauled port of the mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which featured myriad character cameos from various Final Fantasy games, so his appearance isn't too surprising (Cloud is also in the game), but it's nice to have a confirmation. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/09/03/82694391/resonance01.jpg.webp)
